To the surprise of millions of Joshi card collectors around the world, in October 2023 BBM announced a surprise Joshi card set to be released later that year. This is not a “full” card set and does not replace the annual Spring release, but rather an expansion to the 2023 set. The checklist is very limited compared to the regular set, with only 47 different wrestler base cards. The set was released on December 25th and quickly sold out at retail, as BBM Joshi sets tend to do. The big selling point for this set (and probably why it exists) is BBM has autograph cards of KAIRI (Kairi Sane aka Kairi Hojo), Hikaru Shida, Riho, and Sareee as well as the last signed cards of the recently retired Saki Akai. So its a very stacked set.

The structure for 2023 BBM Women’s Pro Wrestling Special Card Set Ambitious!! is dramatically different from the usual release. First of all, the boxes do not contain packs of cards. Every box has this configuration:

• 47 Base Cards (a full set of base cards)
• 8 Special Cards

For the eight special cards, the cards included could be any of the other cards available in the set. Here is the breakdown of what every box has:

• 2 Autograph Cards
• 1 Additional “Hit” (could be an additional autograph card, a Cheki, or a /50 pink foil card)
• 1 Acrylic Card
• 4 of any combination of – SP Cards, Secret Cards, Silver Paper Cards, and Inserts Cards (both regular and serial numbered)

There are pros and cons of this setup. First, the main “con” is that if you buy multiple boxes, you are guaranteed to get a duplicate of every base card. Getting duplicates is never fun, as most don’t have a lot of value so fans that already have one complete set just have another one. This means the only “excitement” of opening any boxes are the eight special cards as the bulk of the box contents is already known. Other negatives about the release is the price (about $115 retail) and the fact every box only has two guaranteed autographs which is lower than any other BBM Joshi release ever made.

It is not all bad though! One benefit of having a small checklist is the chances are pulling a good autograph are much higher. There is very little “fluff” here as the set is full of the biggest stars (not in Stardom) and all the rookies that debuted since the last set. I opened four boxes and in those I got a total of two Ram Kaicho autographs, a Hikaru Shida low serial autograph, a Saori Anou low serial autograph, plus a Cheki and from looking at other breaks these results weren’t that unusual. Also, the low serial numbered insert cards (to both /40 and /20) are a fun surprise and a quick way to boost the value of the box, as its been a long time since BBM had non-autograph serial numbered cards in their Joshi set.

For fans of Joshi cards, I can 100% recommend buying a box. Getting a complete base set in one box is nice if you are only buying one, the autograph checklist is killer, and the low serial base cards are a fun surprise. My recommendation does go down if buying multiple boxes as the duplication can be frustrating and the price is high, so just keep that in mind if you are going to get more than one.

Of all the wrestling card releases, the BBM women’s set (formally called True Heart) is my favorite. Not just because I am a fan of Joshi wrestling, although that is clearly a factor, but because of how in-depth it is and the wrestlers put a lot of effort into their signatures. No quick squiggly line autographs here, as they really go all out to make them unique, with some adding extra text or pictures within their signature. It is truly a unique set and the time the wrestlers put into their cards is appreciated.

For the first time since 2020, life has gotten close enough to normal that the yearly BBM release is back to its old self. The base autographs are finally on-card autographs again, which is a huge plus for collectors as on-card autographs are better than sticker autographs. They look better on the card, and it gives the wrestlers more freedom to write on more of the card. The Special and Insert autographs are still stickers, but those cards tend to have more of a special design so they likely wanted to keep the autograph within a certain space. The list of wrestlers that signed this year is also massive, with 144 wrestlers and ring announcers participating (plus one tag team card).

The roster list is pretty complete. Stardom is not included which is no surprise as they have not participated in the BBM card release since 2012. Also missing is Actwres girl’Z which is normal, plus we are missing some Freelancers such as ASUKA, Natsu Sumire, Jungle Kyona, and Michiko Miyagi. In addition, a few wrestlers that had autograph cards last year are not in this year’s set, mostly due to retirements: KAORU, Kanon, Saki-sama, Tsukushi, Nanae Takahashi, Nodoka Tenma, Mei Saint-Michel, Yoshiko, LuLu Pencil, and the Magical Sugar Rabbits (tag team card) were in last year’s set but not this one. Overall, it is a great list of wrestlers that took part this year with many rookies and other “secret” surprises.

Even though I am writing this checklist in 2022, I recently purchased a box of 2019 BBM True Heart and realized there was not an English checklist anywhere, so figured I may as well do a quick review and provide information on the set. Released in March of 2019, what made this release special is every box contains seven autographs! That is the most of any set and was made possible by the fact that 149 (!!!) wrestlers signed.

As is the norm for True Heart since the 2013 set, Stardom did not take part but every other Joshi promotion was presented, plus a lot of Freelancers. This set had first year cards of two wrestlers very popular today – Unagi Sayaka and Mina Shirakawa. It also has the last autograph card released of current Stardom wrestler Giulia, which is another highly sought after card. My main issue with the card set and why I don’t have very many in my collection is I do not like the design of the autograph cards. The checkerboard background isn’t as easy on the eyes as previous (and future) designs, and it looks very old fashion. The secret autograph cards look great however, so its a shame the base autographs don’t look as nice. Overall though, the very thorough checklist helps make up for that, if you can find a box at a reasonable price there is a lot of potential value.

Shop Exclusive Autograph Cards

Select shops in Japan received special autograph cards to give away with box sales, they were not included in packs. These autograph cards have more details on the front, and a sticker on the back to explain what the card is. The card does not have a serial number, and it is unknown how many of these cards exist per wrestler (or how many wrestlers have them).

Of all the wrestling card releases, the BBM women’s set (formally called True Heart) is my favorite. Not just because I am a fan of Joshi wrestling, although that is clearly a factor, but because of how in-depth it is and the wrestlers put a lot of effort into their signatures. No quick squiggly line autographs here, as they really go all out to make them unique, with some adding extra text or pictures within their signature. It is truly a unique set and the time the wrestlers put into their cards is appreciated.

This year, every box of BBM Women’s Wrestling Cards 2022 has four autographs, with the possibility of getting a fifth autograph in the form of a Cheki. This is a great value for only ~$80, which was the retail price of the box. The BBM Joshi card releases always sell out at retail within a week as it is both popular and limited, so its definitely one you want to pre-order if you are interested. Like last year, the 2022 set has a wide variety of autograph types – regular, secret, insert, silver insert, super secret, and Chekis. Not all wrestlers of course have an autograph in each variation, so be sure to check out the full checklist below to see what your favorite wrestler has. Some bad news – the following wrestlers have a base card but no autograph cards: ASUKA, Riko Kaiju, Emi Sakura, Nanae Takahashi, Arisa Nakajima, Rina Yamashita, Yoshiko, and Lulu Pencil. Most of these wrestlers are affiliated (officially or loosely) with SEAdLINNNG so not sure what happened there, while some may have been in the United States when the cards were signed. Its disappointing, but with the pandemic still raging some issues were bound to arise and overall its an impressive autograph checklist. Wrestlers from Tokyo Joshi Pro, Ice Ribbon, Diana, OZ Academy, Gatoh Move, JUST TAP OUT, Marvelous, PURE-J, Sendai Girls’, and WAVE all are represented in this set (along with various Freelancers), with the only exclusion being Stardom as they have not been part of the BBM Joshi card sets since 2012.

Speaking of the pandemic, one other side effect is all the cards have sticker autographs again this year. BBM addressed this and acknowledged this is not their preference – they prefer on-card autographs. But with COVID restrictions, shows getting cancelled, wrestlers being quarantined, etc. if they did on-card autographs it is likely even more wrestlers would have been missing. I prefer on-card autographs like everyone else, but under these conditions I understand, and at least the wrestlers were really good at staying on the sticker as the stickers were quite large. Overall, it is a very impressive set with a great value, I loved opening every box I did and wish I had even more to open. Highly recommended for any Joshi fan, even if you are not a big card collector the autographs are really fun and you are bound to find something you will enjoy.

Per Bushiroad, there are a total of 191 cards available in the set. They were released via different methods – some in special “PR” packs and most available via Trial Decks. The Trial Decks for each faction (five different ones) retail for 1,600 yen and went on sale March 26th, 2022. The Trial Decks include 50 cards, plus three partner cards. Each Trial Deck also has three random shiny/foil cards. Finally, random Trial Decks also have one special edition shiny card as well at the rate of one every three boxes (on average), with each faction having one available.

To provide some scans of the cards, I will show what I got in the five Trial Decks I purchased, one for each faction. Each faction has their own pre-built Trial Deck. The Trial Decks are split into two sections – half of the cards are included in every Trial Deck regardless of the faction, and half the cards are specific to the faction featured for the Trial Deck. You can click on each picture to make it larger to get a better look at the cards. Here is a sample of the cards found in all Trial Decks:

Every box has three Shiny cards, which are foil versions of a regular base card. These are not specific to the faction of the Trial Deck and can be from any faction, here are some I pulled in my decks:

It is that time of year again – BBM Women’s Wrestling Cards are here! For the first time, the ‘main’ Spring release is ditching the “True Heart” name for reasons unknown, but the new name is more straight forward which they may think will help new fans find the cards. All Joshi promotions except for Stardom take part in the series, and many Freelancers are represented as well. In total, over 145 Joshi wrestlers are including the set, plus some ring announcers as well. Almost all wrestlers have autograph cards, with the main exceptions being ASUKA, Meiko Satomura, and Masha Slamovich (according to the official card list posted on BBM’s website). Even Hikaru Shida is here, as her affiliation with MAKAI apparently trumps her affiliation with AEW.

This year, BBM did something very unique with their autograph cards. There are A LOT of them. Besides the regular autograph cards for the vast majority of the wrestlers in the base set, there are also special autographs and insert autographs. On top of that, the special autograph and insert autograph cards have multiple variants. Over half the wrestlers have a cheki (Polaroid) autograph, with some having two variants of that as well. This means that some wrestlers have 5+ autograph cards total, with Saori Anou leading the pack with EIGHT different autograph cards and cheki variants. The boxes still only have five autographs, so I am assuming that means they made more boxes, hopefully making them available for longer.

Overall, this set is everything a Joshi and card collector could wish for. Stardom hasn’t participated in BBM’s cards since 2012, so this isn’t a surprise and is accepted at this point. With all the different autographs and the variants, there are so many options for card collectors and the base cards have a nice look as well. Another successful year for BBM! The autograph cards are even more unique this year than we’ve ever seen before from BBM with their Joshi cards. I’ll break it down as clearly as I can. There are four different types of autograph cards in this set: Regular, Cheki, Special, and Insert. I’ll start with listing all the regular autograph cards, most of these are serial numbered to around /100. The cards with (+ C) on the checklist means the wrestler also has a cheki (Polaroid picture) autograph /10 in addition to a regular autograph card. Some wrestlers have two cheki autographs, one in wrestling gear and one in casual attire. Those wrestlers will have (+ 2C).

Beyond the regular autograph cards, there are also Special Autograph Cards. These come in sets of two: a Normal Version and a Holo Version. The Normal is /80, while the Holo is /40. The following wrestlers have a Special Autograph Card:

Card Set: 2020 BBM Women’s Wrestling Ambitious!!
Release Date: November 28th, 2020

For the first time in the history of BBM women’s wrestling card releases, the series is having its second release in one year! This is an interesting set. The cards are new in design, with a lot of variations that we don’t normally see in the True Heart sets. The roster list is shorter however as there are a high number of wrestlers not represented, including all of SEAdLINNNG, Diana, Marvelous, OZ Academy, Gatoh Move, JTO, and Sendai Girls’, plus various Freelancers (Stardom is also not included but they have not taken part in BBM releases since 2012). This change was likely due to COVID, as getting to events for the wrestlers to sign was likely more complicated. That leaves Ice Ribbon and Tokyo Joshi Pro as the two bigger promotions included in the set, plus Actwres girl’Z and PURE-J. For fans of the other promotions this is definitely a disappointment, especially as one box is a similar price as the full release back in February.

With entire promotions missing from the set, the appeal may be limited, however they did make an effort to make up for it with lots of repeat cards of the more popular wrestlers. Wrestlers such as Ram Kaicho and Miku Aono have a high number of cards, with Maya Yukihi dominating all with her own special collection both in base cards and autographs. While the set is more for serious collectors or big fans of one of the promotions that did make the cut, the cards have a clean look and the number of autograph cards is still impressive. After a big 2012, the True Heart series took a hit in 2013. Stardom officially left the True Heart series in 2013, meaning some of the most popular wrestlers were no longer available. While we are used to that now in 2020, at the time it was an issue as previously the True Heart set always had the country’s biggest Joshi stars. The set also did not have any ‘special’ cards outside of Cheki cards, as there were no kiss cards or other memorabilia cards.

The other issue with the set depends on personal tastes, but in my opinion (and many others) both the base cards and autograph cards are a drop down in design quality. The base cards are very busy, as can be seen below, and the autograph cards are very plain looking. This has led to the cards not being very popular as the designs were much better prior to 2013 and after 2014 (which also didn’t have a great design). The main perk of this set is it does include some wrestlers popular today, including Kana and Hikaru Shida, and has the first official trading card of Mia Yim. Otherwise, its a pretty skippable set compared to the ones around it. Here is the card checklist:

Card Set: 2012 BBM True Heart
Release Date: Early 2012

2012 is a special year for BBM True Heart, as it was the last year that Stardom participated in the set. Starting in 2013, Stardom started releasing their own cards (at least through 2019) and no longer were included in True Heart, which hurt the product a bit as Stardom was (and still is) one of the most popular Joshi promotions in Japan. 2012 also includes the last signed card of Bull Nakano, making it truly a special set. Because of this, the signed cards from 2012 can go for a lot of money, with the most popular autograph cards sometimes selling for between $300 and $500 each. Needless to say, its a popular set.

BBM didn’t go too far outside the box in 2012, as they went with the standard base card, autograph card, or Cheki cards for fans to pull. The autograph cards do not have a set serial number but tend to be between 80 and 100 per card for most of the set. Some wrestlers have at least three cards in the set between their different gimmicks and tag team cards, including Misaki Ohata, Kana, and Ayumi Kurihara. Here is the card checklist:

Card Set: 2017 BBM True Heart
Release Date: Early 2017

In 2017, True Heart had perhaps one of the “simplest” sets in the history of the series. There are no kiss cards, memorabilia cards, or low serial number regular autograph cards which they had experimented with in the past. They did have Cheki autograph cards however, which are a nice inclusion and give hardcore fans something to chase since they are rare and serial numbered to 10 or less. A Cheki is a Polaroid picture that is signed by the wrestler, making them really 1/1 as every Cheki is different as they are each a different real-life picture.

For newer fans, 2017 is a fun set as it has early cards of some popular wrestlers today. Wrestlers that at the time were still early in their careers but hadn’t fully blossomed (such as Sareee, Yuka Sakazaki, Riho, Konami, and ASUKA) are all sought-after cards to collect in the current Joshi card scene. 2017 also has the first card of Hana Kimura, who tragically passed away in 2020 right as her popularity was peaking. The set desperately needs something extra for fans to hope to pull as they are busting open packs as there are few surprises, but with the inclusion of younger stars there is still some interest in 2017 boxes among current fans.
