Bikiniing

The Bikiniing Visual Book series is one of the most popular Stardom photobooks each year. Beginning in 2012, Stardom has released a Bikiniing Photobook every year, featuring the Stardom wrestlers wearing bikinis or other swimwear (as the name implies). Not all wrestlers participate if this type of photoshoot goes against their wrestling character or personal preferences, however the majority of the wrestlers in the promotion do take part. You can read reviews for more magazine and photobooks on the Joshi Photobook Reviews page.

Full Details

Title: Bikiniing Stardom Visual Book
Release: July 2012
Pages: 58
Cost: ¥2,750
Where to Buy: Currently Unavailable

As is the tradition for the Bikiniing series, this photobook features the Stardom wrestlers in bikinis or something similar. Nothing in this first edition is overly scandalous and many of the photos aren’t actually taken on a beach/outside but rather in a professional studio. Not all the outfits are revealing, as wrestlers mostly stayed in gimmick if they aren’t the “bikini” type (such as Yoshiko). The following wrestlers were featured:

  • Io Shirai
  • Nanae Takahashi
  • Miho Wakizawa
  • Hiroyo Matsumoto
  • Yuzuki Aikawa
  • Yoko Bito
  • Kairi Hojo (Kairi Sane)
  • Natsumi Showzuki
  • Natsuki Taiyo
  • Mayu Iwatani
  • Eri Susa
  • Haruka Kato
  • Act Yasukawa (also as Yuka Yasukawa)
  • Yoshiko

As for the pictures, the ‘special’ aspect of this particular photobook is as far as I know this was the only photobook that pictured and labeled Act Yasukawa by her real name. She has pictures in the photobook both as herself and as Act Yasukawa. Otherwise, the pictures are pretty standard for the photobook series, as they include both individual pictures of the wrestlers and some group shots as well. Also to note – Hiroyo Matsumoto only has one picture in the photobook, so if you are a big fan of hers, I wouldn’t recommend buying this photobook just for her even though she rarely participates in these types of photoshoots. Here are some sample pictures from the photobook:

Before Kana was the international superstar that she is today, she started building her career and fan base a decade earlier in Japan. After a brief break due to a health issue, Kana returned to wrestling in late 2007 and worked as a Freelancer in a variety of promotions. During this time period, a set of nine DVDs was produced by Kana of her matches from Pro Wrestling WAVE and NEO. The matches on the DVDs range from 2008 to 2010, and really show Kana’s growth from a passionate young wrestler with potential to one of the best female wrestlers in the world. I finally tracked down all nine DVDs from the set, so I figured since Kana is one of my favorite wrestlers it would be fun to watch and review them.

I’ll provide context before each match if there is anything noteworthy I can find, although of course not all matches in wrestling have a set purpose (especially with Freelancers like Kana). All the matches below took place in NEO in 2009, directly after the matches on the Kana Special #2 review.

All wrestlers on the DVD have profiles on Joshi City, you can click on their names above to go straight to their profile for additional information.

(c) Kyoko Inoue and Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Kana and Nanae Takahashi
NEO Tag Team Championship

Event:
NEO “NEO STRONG HOLD IN JAPAN”
Date: August 29th, 2009
Location:  Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium #2 in Osaka, Japan
Announced Attendance: 551

We kick off this DVD with a tag team championship match! Kana and Nanae Takahashi started teaming in 2008 as part of a group called “Passion Red,” however this is their first shot at a title together. Kyoko and Hiroyo won the titles on March 29th, 2009 against Kyoko Kimura and Atsuko Emoto, and this is their second defense of the title. Up to this point, Kana had never held a championship, and she looks to change that by winning the NEO Tag Team Championship. It should be noted this was just a midcard match on a smaller show, not the main event, which was a cage death match.

Hiroyo and Kana start the match and immediately start trading strikes, hard shoulderblock by Hiroyo but Kana drop toeholds her into the corner and Nanae runs in and dropkicks Hiroyo. Hip attack by Kana but Kyoko comes in to help, as Kana eats a double shoulderblock. Hiroyo tosses Kana down by the hair and hits a bodyblock, she gets on the second turnbuckle but Kana avoids the dropkick and kicks Hiroyo repeatedly in the chest. Kana goes for a hip attack and gets stuck in the ropes, dropkick by Hiroyo and she tags in Kyoko. Hip attacks by Kyoko and she flings down Kana by the hair, butt smash by Kyoko but Kana fights back with strikes. Kyoko puts Kana in a single leg crab hold but with Nanae’s help she makes it to the ropes, Kyoko tags in Hiroyo, scoop slam by Hiroyo to Kana and she hits a second one. Backbreaker by Hiroyo and she puts Kana in a crab hold, but it is quickly broken up. Hard elbows by Kana to Hiroyo and she hits a dropkick before tagging in Nanae, shoulderblock by Nanae and she hits an elbow drop. Nanae puts Hiroyo in the corner upside down and hits a body avalanche, crab hold by Nanae and Kana kicks Hiroyo in the chest while she is in the hold. Dropkick by Hiroyo and she makes the tag to Kyoko, Kyoko and Nanae take turns trying to knock each other over with lariats until Nanae dumps Kyoko over the top rope to the floor. Kana gets on the apron and uses a hip attack down onto Kyoko, Hiroyo wonders over and Nanae dives onto her with a tope suicida. Back in the ring with Kyoko, Kana hits a diving hip attack and Nanae follows with a reverse splash for two. Nanae hangs Kyoko over the top rope so both she and Kana and hit running strikes on her, Hiroyo comes in to help however and dumps Nanae over the top rope to the floor onto Kana. Hiroyo goes up top and dives out onto the ring on both her opponents, and she and Kyoko attack both of their opponents around the ring and into the stands. Kyoko and Nanae return to the ring, Kyoko gets Nanae on her shoulders and tosses her onto Hiroyo’s knee. She then throws Kana on top of Nanae, Hiroyo gets Kyoko on her shoulders and tosses her onto both of their opponents. Cover by Kyoko, but Nanae kicks out. Kyoko puts Nanae in submission but lets her go after a moment and tags in Hiroyo, STF by Hiroyo but Nanae gets to the ropes for the break. Stomps by Hiroyo and she tags in Kyoko, vertical suplex by Kyoko and she hits a second one before putting Nanae in a modified camel clutch.

Nanae gets away and tags in Kana, kicks to the leg by Kana and she stretches Kyoko’s leg. Kana mounts Kyoko and goes for the armbreaker, but Kyoko blocks it and gets Kana back to her feet. Kana goes for a hip attack but Kyoko doesn’t budge, she tries again but has no luck. Waistlock by Kana but Kyoko gets out of it, elbows by Kana and she sneaks in a schoolboy for two. She goes for another hip attack but Kyoko catches her and hits a release German, she picks up Kana but Kana slaps her. Kana catches Kyoko’s arm and applies a short armbar, but Kyoko gets to the ropes for the break. Kana keeps on Kyoko’s arm before applying a Dragon Sleeper, but Hiroyo breaks it up. PK by Kana, but Kyoko gets a shoulder up on the cover. Kicks by Kana but Kyoko delivers a hard lariat, she tags in Hiroyo and Hiroyo comes in the ring with a missile dropkick. Cover by Hiroyo, but it gets two. Hiroyo picks up Kana and gets her on her back, but Nanae runs in and kicks her. Hip attack by Kana and she dropkicks Hiroyo in the knee, hard kick by Kana and the referee temporarily stops the match so he can check on Hiroyo’s face. She’s determined able to continue, more kicks by Kana and she goes for an armbar, but Hiroyo blocks it and hits a series of elbows. Hiroyo kicks Kana in the face to make them even, Hiroyo gets Kana on her back but Kana slides off and applies an ankle hold, but it is broken up. Nanae hits a cutter onto Hiroyo, German suplex hold by Kana but Hiroyo kicks out. Nanae stays in and lariats Hiroyo, Kyoko lariats Nanae from the apron and Hiroyo hits a missile dropkick, but the cover only gets a two. Nanae goes for a diving lariat but Hiroyo kicks her arm, she goes off the ropes but Kana runs in and Hiroyo is hit with a double dropkick. Nanae goes for a reverse splash but Hiroyo catches her on her shoulders and hits a Samoan Drop. Kana and Nanae both kick Hiroyo, Nanae puts Hiroyo in an armtrap crossface while Kana has Kyoko in an armbar, Nanae changes her hold to a sleeper, but Hiroyo gets a toe on the ropes for the break.

Nanae goes off the ropes but Hiroyo catches her with a hard elbow, Hiroyo gets Nanae on her shoulders and hits a gutbuster but Nanae kicks out of the pin. Kyoko jumps on Hiroyo’s back to give more weight to her double kneedrop, but again Nanae kicks out. Hiroyo goes for the backdrop suplex but Nanae blocks it and hits a lariat, she picks up Hiroyo and nails the Falcon Arrow, but Kyoko breaks up the pin. Kana holds down Kyoko while Nanae picks up Hiroyo, Kana tries to kick Hiroyo but she kicks Nanae by accident. Backdrop Driver by Hiroyo to Nanae, but Kana breaks up the cover. Lariat by Kyoko to Nanae, she picks her up but Kana kicks Kyoko from behind. Nanae and Kana both attack Kyoko but Kyoko lariats both of them, Kyoko picks up Nanae and she nails a powerbomb for a two count. Kana runs in but Kyoko fights them both off, kicks by Nanae and Kana and Nanae covers Kyoko for two. Sliding Kick by Nanae to Kyoko, she goes up top but Kyoko joins her and hits a superplex. Kyoko picks up Nanae and nails a sit-down powerbomb, but Nanae gets a shoulder up. Kana runs in and hits a hip attack, Sliding Kick by Nanae but Hiroyo breaks up the cover. Hiroyo and Kana trade strikes but end up knocking each other down, Nanae hits Kyoko with a pair of backdrop suplexes and she hits a lariat, but Hiroyo breaks up the pin. Nanae goes up top and delivers the Refrigerator Bomb, but Kyoko barely gets a shoulder up. Nanae picks up Kyoko but Kyoko nails a lariat, Nanae hits a lariat of her own but Kyoko rolls her up for two. Kyoko and Nanae trade lariat attempts, Hiroyo runs in and hits a backdrop suplex on Nanae, but the bell rings as the 30 Minute Time Limit expires. The match is a Draw, Kyoko Inoue and Hiroyo Matsumoto remain the champions.

For what really was just a midcard match that was clearly not the big attraction on the show, this was better than I was expecting. They started really slow, and the first ten minutes or so of the match was pretty uneventful as they had to waste some time to get to 30 minutes, but once the match got cracking it was pretty great. Kyoko is a stubborn wrestler but she has incorporated that into her gimmick, which makes it all the more special/memorable when her opponent does get one over on her. Kana and Hiroyo, while still fairly early into their careers, were both fantastic and all four have solid chemistry. I generally am not a big fan of draws but it was part of a bigger story here, and both teams were so close to winning in the long end stretch of the match. Overall an entertaining match with a lot more highs than lows, once they got past the slow start.  Recommended

Kana vs. Ayumi Kurihara

Event:
NEO “BEAT UP 2009”
Date: September 20th, 2009
Location:  Tokyo Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 948

For NEO’s event at Korakuen Hall, Kana faces off against future best friend Ayumi Kurihara. Down the road, these two became a regular tag team as KanAyu, but at this point hey were still both young wrestlers trying to march their way up the card in NEO. This was a big show for NEO, but this match was the third match on the event so it wasn’t considered a big attraction.

Ayumi and Kana quickly start trading elbows and kicks, they bounce off the ropes and Ayumi dropkicks Kana as she goes for a hip attack. Kana gets an armbar applied but Ayumi reverses it into a front necklock, Kana gets out of the hold and she applies an ankle hold. Ayumi gets to the ropes to force the break, Kana jumps on the second turnbuckle but Ayumi slaps her and joins her. Ayumi applies an Octopus Hold while on the top turnbuckle, she releases it after a moment and dropkicks Kana while she is in the corner. Ayumi goes for a springboard move but Kana kicks her in the stomach, they trade waistlocks until Kana gets Ayumi to the mat with an armbar. Ayumi gets to the ropes for the break, kicks by Kana but Ayumi catches one and hits an elbow. Kana slaps her back, suplex by Kana but Ayumi gets her hand on the ropes to breaks up the pin. Kana kicks Ayumi into the corner and kicks her in the head, cover by Kana but it gets two. Ayumi drops Kana with an uranage, they slowly get up and Ayumi rocks Kana with an elbow. Dropkicks by Ayumi, she goes up top and delivers a missile dropkick for a two count. Ayumi goes for another uranage but Kana blocks it and hits a release German. Kana kicks Ayumi in the head but Ayumi elbows her back and covers Kana for two. Back kick by Kana and she kicks Ayumi in the head, she goes off the ropes but Ayumi ducks the hip attack and cradles Kana for two. Elbow by Ayumi, Kana goes for a suplex but Ayumi blocks it and they trade flash pin attempts. Ayumi grabs Kana and hits another uranage, but Kana kicks out of the cover. High kick by Kana, she picks up Ayumi but Ayumi applies an inside cradle for two. Head kicks by Kana, she goes off the ropes and nails the Billiken, but Ayumi barely kicks out of the cover. The bell then rings, as the Ten Minute Time Limit has expired. The match is a Draw.

Even though it wasn’t a very long match, it still had a lot of fun elements to it. Kana and Ayumi have great chemistry and were always comfortable working with each other, as the match had a lot of stiff strikes and suplexes. The uranages in particular were brutal but some of Kana’s kicks had just as much impact as they just laid into each other. Even though it wasn’t an important match they still were out there to impress, I wish they had more time but they worked well with that they were given. Overall a solid match.  Mildly Recommended

(c) Kyoko Inoue and Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Kana and Nanae Takahashi
NEO Tag Team Championship

Event:
NEO “TAKE ACTION”
Date: October 10th, 2009
Location:  Shin-Kiba 1st Ring in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 242

Since their last match (the first match on this DVD) ended in a Draw, we get a re-match! The match is still not in the main event, just as it wasn’t last time, with a hardcore match featuring LCO getting the nod on this show. No real further explanation needed, as Kana again looks to win the first title in her young career.

Kyoko and Nanae immediately hit lariats to Kana and Hiroyo as the match starts, they face off and trade elbows until both are schoolboyed from behind. No idea who is legal or if it matters. Nanae goes after Hiroyo and both she and Kana connect with running strikes in the corner, snapmare by Nanae to Hiroyo and she stomps her repeatedly. Hard shoulderblock by Nanae, she tosses Hiroyo to the mat and puts her in a Camel Clutch. Nanae tags in Kana, she eats an elbow though before Hiroyo dropkicks her to the mat. Back kick by Kana and she hits a hip attack, sending Kyoko out of the ring. Hiroyo joins Kyoko down on the floor, Kana goes on the second turnbuckle and dives down onto Kyoko with a hip attack. Kyoko is rolled back in the ring, Nanae and Kana put her hanging on the top turnbuckle before both hit running strikes. Missile dropkick by Kana, Nanae then hits the Reverse Splash and Kana finishes the series with a PK. Cover, but Hiroyo breaks it up. Hiroyo stays in but Kana spits at her and rolls up Kyoko for two. Kana goes for a hip attack but Kyoko catches her and hits a German suplex, lariat by Kyoko and she tags in Hiroyo. Missile dropkick by Hiroyo, she elbows Kana against the ropes but Kana catches her arm and takes Hiroyo to the mat. Irish whip by Nanae and she hits a body avalanche in the corner, Hiroyo returns with one of her own but Nanae hits another one. Hiroyo tosses Nanae onto the apron but Kana comes in with a reverse DDT to Hiroyo.

Refrigerator Bomb by Nanae, but Hiroyo barely gets a shoulder up. Nanae goes for the Reverse Splash but Hiroyo gets her feet up, Kyoko comes in and puts Nanae on her shoulders while Hiroyo does the same to Kana. Gutbuster by Kana, Hiroyo then tosses Nanae onto Hiroyo’s knee for a backbreaker, hurting Hiroyo in the process. Kyoko stays on Nanae and puts her in a crab hold while the referee checks on Hiroyo’s leg, but Nanae gets to the ropes for the break. Back up, Nanae and Kyoko trade strikes and lariats until Kyoko sends Nanae to the mat, Kyoko picks up Nanae but Nanae snaps off a backdrop suplex. Kana comes in and kicks Kyoko in the head, allowing Nanae to hit a second backdrop suplex for a two count cover. Nanae picks up Kyoko and puts her on the top turnbuckle, she goes for the Muscle Buster but Kyoko punches her off. Hiroyo is back (on one leg) but doesn’t help much, Nanae joins Kyoko up top and she hits a superplex. Cover by Nanae, but it gets two. Nanae goes back up top but Kyoko joins her and hits a superplex, Kyoko picks up Nanae but Kana kicks Kyoko in the leg. Kyoko punches Kana back before powerbombing Nanae, but Nanae kicks out of the cover. Kyoko drags up Nanae but Nanae hits a jumping kick, elbows by Kyoko but Kana kicks Kyoko in the leg.  Double Irish whip to Kyoko but Kyoko lariats both of them, Hiroyo limps over and hits a backdrop suplex on Kana while Kyoko hits a sit-down powerbomb on Nanae for a two count. Nanae gets up and trades lariats with Kyoko, a battle which Kyoko wins but Kana breaks up her cover attempt. Kyoko picks up Nanae but Nanae blocks the powerbomb attempt and hits a backdrop suplex. Kana and Nanae hit simultaneous kicks on Kyoko, Billiken by Kana and Nanae delivers a Sliding Kick for a two count. Nanae slams Kyoko to the mat, she picks her back up but Kyoko hits a short range lariat for two. Jumping kick by Nanae, Hiroyo comes in and elbows Nanae but Kana catches her with a German suplex. Kyoko is distracted by Kana, giving Nanae a chance to deliver a lariat. High kick by Kana to Kyoko, Nanae follows with a lariat and covers Kyoko for two. Another lariat by Nanae, and this time she gets the three count! Kana and Nanae Takahashi are the new champions!

Hiroyo was legitimately hurt with a torn ligament in her ankle (she missed about a month of action), which made the last five minutes of this match really disjointed since they had to do things on the fly. I doubt it changed the end result, but there were signs of miscommunication while they figured out what to do, and a fair amount of repeated spots. Up to that point I was really enjoying it, they didn’t waste any time getting the action sped up as they picked up where they left off a few months prior. Nanae “winning” the lariat battle and pinning Kyoko was a nice moment, and storyline-wise it kept Kyoko strong since she basically was fighting off both Kana and Nanae by herself by the end. Disappointing just due to Hiroyo’s injury, still a fun watch but not as good as the last match we saw between these teams.  Mildly Recommended

(c) Kana and Nanae Takahashi vs. Natsuki Taiyo and Passion Ray
NEO Tag Team Championship

Event:
NEO “NEO STRONG HOLD IN JAPAN”
Date: November 22nd, 2009
Location:  Nagoya Chigusa Sports Center in Nagoya, Japan
Announced Attendance: 373

Sometimes, your friend has something you want, and you just have to try to take it. All four of these wrestlers are in the Passion Red faction, with Nanae Takahashi and Natsuki Taiyo in particular being good friends. But championships are the most important thing in wrestling so those nice feelings are set aside as Natsuki and Passion Ray challenge for the belts. This is Kana and Nanae Takahashi’s first defense of the titles they won on October 10th from Kyoko Inoue and Nanae Takahashi.

Ray and Natsuki attack before the bell rings, they isolate Kana in the ring but she dropkicks Natsuki while Nanae hits a missile dropkick on Ray. All four trade strikes in the ring, Natsuki fights off both of her opponents before a recovered Ray hits a dropkick. The action spills to the floor, Ray gets on the apron and flips off of it onto Kana and Nanae. Natsuki then hits a triple jump plancha down onto both of them as well, Kana is rolled back into the ring and double teamed, ending with a double elbow drop. Kana drop toeholds Natsuki into the corner and tags in Nanae, dropkick by Nanae to Natsuki and she applies a front necklock, but Natsuki reverses it. Natsuki tags in Ray, Nanae and Ray lock knuckles until Nanae pushes Ray to the mat. Nanae picks Ray up with a headlock, shoulderblock by Nanae and the two trade elbows and slaps. Dropkick by Ray but Nanae kicks out of the cover. Natsuki is tagged in and she dropkicks Nanae repeatedly, she goes up top and hits a missile dropkick before putting Nanae in a modified Camel Clutch. She switches the hold to a bodyscissors but Nanae gets out of it and applies a leg lock, headbutt by Nanae and she hits an elbow drop for two. Nanae tags in Kana, she goes for a hip attack but Natsuki rolls out of the way. She tries again and succeeds this time, kicks by Kana but Natsuki knocks her down and they trade kneelocks. They end up in the ropes for a break, Irish whip by Kana but Natsuki hits a jumping elbow strike.

Kicks by Natsuki and she tags in Ray, knees by Ray and she ties up Kana in the ropes so that she and Natsuki can attack her from the apron. Back in the ring, Ray picks up Kana but Kana kicks her into the ropes, Ray charges Kana but Kana delivers a dropkick. Running kick to the chest by Kana and they trade holds until Kana hits a reverse DDT. Kana tags in Nanae, lariats by Nanae in the corner but Ray kicks her back and chops her repeatedly. Space Rolling Elbow attempt by Ray but Nanae catches her and slams Ray to the mat. She goes for the Reverse Splash but Ray moves out of the way, Natsuki comes in and both hit slingshot dropkicks onto Nanae. Ray goes up top, Nanae charges in but Ray jumps down to the mat and applies a waistlock. Nanae elbows out of it but Ray snaps off a hurricanrana, Tiger Feint Kick by Ray and she covers Nanae for two. Ray goes up top but Nanae gets her feet up on the moonsault attempt, high kick by Kana to Ray and Nanae hits a backdrop suplex. Kana picks up Natsuki and hits a neckbreaker, dropkick to the knee by Kana but Natsuki catches her next kick and goes for the Iguchi Bomb. Nanae breaks it up before she can hit the move, Kana goes up top but Natsuki armdrags her back to the mat. Natsuki goes up top and hits a moonsault while Ray also hits one on Nanae, but it gets a two count. Natsuki picks up Kana but Kana kicks her and applies the short armbar, Natsuki rolls out of it but Kana puts her in a crucifix hold. Natsuki gets to the ropes for the break, kicks by Kana and the two trade slaps. Spinning backfist by Kana, and she covers Natsuki for a two count. Kana picks up Natsuki and hits a few knees, Ray come sin and delivers her cartwheel powerbomb before Natsuki kicks Kana in the head for two. A rolling cradle by Natsuki also gets two, she goes off the ropes but Nanae cuts her off with a lariat. Nanae and Kana both hit running kicks onto Natsuki, but Ray breaks up the cover. Kana goes to kick Natsuki but kicks Nanae by accident, Momo☆Latch by Natsuki but Nanae breaks up the cover. Natsuki goes for the Taiyo-chan☆Bomb but Nanae kicks her in the chest before she can finish the move, high kicks by Kana and she covers Natsuki for the three count! Kana and Nanae Takahashi retain the championship.

One of the amusing things of watching these Kana and Nanae Takahashi matches now is that they really weren’t a great team in regards to teamwork. They noticeably aren’t on the same page, sometimes as part of the match but other times not related to the story they are telling. Natsuki and Ray are both really fun to watch, they actually did show a lot of quality teamwork and they kept the pace of the match up. The ending seemed pretty sudden, not that Kana’s head kicks aren’t deadly but for a main event title match I expected more of a hot end run. Overall it was good but not great, sold action throughout but felt a bit disjointed.  Mildly Recommended

Event: Stardom “Third Anniversary”
Date: January 26th, 2014
Location: Tokyo Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 1,150

*I am slowing bringing my Joshi Reviews from Puroresu Central over to Joshi City so I can have all my Joshi reviews in one place. Some features of my current reviews on this site may be missing as my style has changed over the years, however I will have it match the Joshi City review format as closely as I can. The original review date can be found at the bottom of the review, I will try not to make any major changes to the text unless I see something that needs clarifying or correcting.*

Stardom is another promotion that I am introducing myself to as I broaden my wrestling viewing a bit. I have heard good things about the promotion as they have some skilled wrestlers, so hopefully their first event to be taped for 2014 leaves a positive first impression. This is a big event for Stardom as three of their titles are being defended. Here is the full card:

All the Joshi wrestlers above have profiles on the website, you can click on their names to go straight to it. Let’s hop to it.

Koguma vs. Yuna Manase

Wristlock by Koguma to start, Manase cartwheels out of it and yanks on Koguma’s arm.  Koguma rolls out of it and hits an armdrag, she charges Manase in the corner and delivers a dropkick.  Kicks by Koguma, she picks up Manase but Manase pushes her off and throws Koguma in the corner.  Irish whip by Manase and she hits a running dropkick.  Stomps by Koguma, Irish whip to the corner, reversed, and Manase delivers a running boot to the face.  Koguma falls down to a seated position and Manase stomps on her repeatedly.  Knee by Manase, she pulls out Koguma and covers her for a one count.  Manase picks up Koguma but Koguma clubs her off, and the two trade strikes.  Big boot by Manase but Koguma hits a DDT, cover, but it gets a two count.  Koguma applies a sleeper before applying a stretch hold, but Manase gets out of it.  Front facelock by Koguma but Manase stomps her foot and hits a scissors kick.  Armbar by Manase but Koguma wiggles to the ropes to force a break.  Manase waits for Koguma to get up but Koguma avoids the big boot and hits an elbow.  Slap by Manase, she goes for a scissors kick but Koguma catches it and covers Manase for a two count.  Koguma picks up Manase, Irish whip, reversed, and Manase kicks Koguma in the chest.  Grounded front facelock by Manase and she hits the Payday for a two count cover.  Manase picks up Koguma and goes for it again, but Koguma gets out of it and rolls up Manase for a two count.  Running boot by Manase near the corner, she grabs Koguma and nails the Heel Drop.  Cover, and she picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Yuna Manase

A rookie match, although I am glad that Manase is over 18 with that outfit that she wears.  It was easy to tell these two are still learning, as they still haven’t mastered the staple of Puroresu – strike exchanges.  But besides the awkwardness of those it was not a bad match, just basic which is understandable.  Manase hit her kicks well (the Heel Drop was nice) and it wasn’t long enough to be offensive or anything.  Rookies need experience so while not a great match it wasn’t a bad way to start out the event.

Kaori Yoneyama, Kellie Skater, and Yuhi vs. Manami Toyota, Matsumoto, and Iwatani

Iwatani and Yuhi start things off.  Yuhi kicks Iwatani to start the match, Irish whip, reversed, Yuhi goes off the ropes as well and Yuhi knocks Iwatani to the mat.  Wristlock by Yuhi and she goes for a springboard move, but Matsumoto shakes the ropes.  Matsumoto comes in the ring and they beat down Yuhi, double Irish whip but Yuhi cartwheels by them.  Skater comes in the ring, and she hits a springboard armdrag while Yuhi hits one onto Matsumoto at the same time.  Yuhi and Skater kick Iwatani and Yoneyama is tagged in.  Toyota and Skater beat down Iwatani, triple Irish whip by Iwatani but she slams on the breaks and Toyota comes off the top turnbuckle with a diving crossbody onto all three.   Skater is singled out in the ring and Matsumoto hits a running splash onto Skater.  A little brown backpack of some sort is put onto Skater’s chest,  Iwatani goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a body splash onto Skater.  They then dump a box full of little brown things (they look like mini-hamburgers), Toyota goes up to the top turnbuckle but Skater moves out of the way of the diving body press.  Yoneyama comes back in the ring and attacks Iwatani from behind, German suplex hold by Yuhi to Iwatani but it gets a two count.  Skater waits for Iwatani to get up and kicks her in the chest before hitting a cross-armed Side Russian Leg Sweep for a two count cover.  Matsumoto gets in the ring, the brown bag is put over Skater’s head and Toyota hits a missile dropkick from the top turnbuckle.  Matsumoto grabs Skater and hits a Liger Bomb, cover, and she picks up the three count.  Your winners:  Manami Toyota, Hiroyo Matsumoto, and Mayu Iwatani

I don’t care what all the results say on various websites, it was Matsumoto that got the pin, not Toyota… I know who Toyota is.   Only half of the match was shown but I assume we got the gist of it, I am not 100% sure what the significance of the brown bag is but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter.  We didn’t really see enough of this to get a great feel for it, but what we saw was fine.  Compared to the last match you could tell these were more seasoned wrestlers as the moves were all hit smoothly and they kept the pace going.  Solid match, just not a lot of it was shown.

Takumi Iroha vs. Yoshiko

Joined in Progress.  Elbow by Iroha but Yoshiko hits her back and they trade shots.  Yoshiko splashes Iroha from behind and gets her on her shoulders, but Iroha gets out of it.  Iroha goes for a suplex, Yoshiko gets out of it and goes off the ropes but Iroha delivers a dropkick.  Backdrop lift into a front sit-down slam by Iroha, cover, but it gets a two  count.  Iroha waits for Yoshiko to get up and goes for a kick but Yoshiko catches it and headbutts Iroha.  Chokebomb by Iroha and she hits a senton for a two count cover.  Yoshiko positions Iroha in front of the corner, she goes for a reverse splash but Iroha rolls out of the way.  Waistlock by Iroha but Yoshiko elbows out of it, Iroha goes off the ropes and hits a spinning heel kick.  Cover, but Yoshiko kicks out.  Iroha stomps Yoshiko and goes up to the top turnbuckle, delivering a diving body press.  Cover, but again it gets two.  Iroha picks up Yoshiko and applies a waistlock, German suplex hold by Iroha but Yoshiko kicks out.  Iroha picks up Yoshiko and goes for a vertical suplex, but Yoshiko blocks it.  Lariat by Yoshiko, cover, but it gets two.  Yoshiko picks up Iroha and hits a second chokebomb, cover, but Iroha gets a shoulder up. Yoshiko positions Iroha in front of the corner, she goes up to the second turnbuckle and hits a diving senton.  Cover, and she picks up the three count. Your winner:  Yoshiko

Looks like we only saw about half the match.  Yoshiko needs a new killer move, I am generally not a big fan of repeating big moves in a match unless its a big title match or something, especially if the move is just a set-up for the finisher.  Iroha is a rookie going through her ‘trial series’ so it is more about her learning than it is about her actually winning matches.  Maybe here she learned that trading strikes with someone twice your size is not a great idea.  Seemed fine for what we saw but I would have liked to have seen the first half of the match.

(c) Nanae Takahashi and Miho Wakizawa vs. Kyoko Kimura and Alpha Female

Goddesses of Stardom Championship

Kimura and Alpha Female attack their opponents with the belts before the match has started, and beat them down in the ring.  Wakizawa and Takahashi are thrown into different corners but they get the advantage and lariat Kimura and Alpha Female.  Kimura is isolated but she applies The Claw to Takahashi and Wakizawa.  Wakizawa hits a neckbreaker onto Kimura and Takahashi follows with a dropkick.  Wakizawa puts Kimura in a camel clutch while Takahashi poses over them.  Double Irish whip to Kimura but she avoids the double dropkick and kicks both of her opponents.  Kimura tags in Alpha Female, and Alpha Female applies a stretch hold.  Kimura comes back in the ring with some ketchup (I am assuming) in a bottle, and she hits Takahashi with it.  She then sets up Wakizawa in the ropes and sprays ketchup all over her face.  If it had been mayo this would have been a far more disturbing image.  Kimura gets a running start in the ring and kicks Wakizawa in the back of the head while she is still tied up in the ropes.  Kimura tags in Alpha Female, and Alpha Female stands on Wakizawa’s face before rubbing her face into the mat.  Alpha Female stomps Wakizawa into the mat and goes for a lariat but Wakizawa ducks it and rolls up Alpha Female for a two count.  Wakizawa tags in Takahashi, Takahashi clubs Alpha Female against the ropes, Irish whip, reversed, and Takahashi hits an elbow.  Alpha Female returns the favor, Kimura comes in the ring but Takahashi hits a crossbody onto both of them.  Takahashi hits lariats onto both Kimura and Alpha Female in the corner, Wakizawa goes up to the second turnbuckle and hits a diving body press onto Alpha Female.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Wakizawa applies a crossface onto Alpha Female but Alpha Female muscles out of it and hits a side slam.  Alpha Female picks up Takahashi and hits a fallaway slam.  Alpha Female tags in Kimura, knees by Kimura to the head of Takahashi and she tries to hit her with the ketchup, but Takahashi blocks it.  Lariats by Takahashi, cover, but it gets a two count.

Takahashi goes off the ropes but Kimura catches her with a big boot, Kimura goes off the ropes now but Takahashi hits a lariat.  Waistlock by Takahashi but Kimura elbows out of it.  Elbows by Takahashi and she applies another waistlock, Wakizawa comes in the ring to help and Takahashi is finally able to hit the backdrop suplex.  Cover, but Kimura gets a foot on the bottom rope.  We clip ahead as Alpha Female is in the ring and she lariats Wakizawa.  She and Takahashi both go off the ropes but Takahashi’s lariat hits the mark.  Takahashi goes up to the second turnbuckle, Wakizawa then runs in the ring and Wakizawa hurricanranas Takahashi onto Alpha Female.  German suplex hold by Wakizawa to Alpha Female but it gets a two count.  Wakizawa picks up Alpha Female but Alpha Female hits a short-arm lariat.  Alpha Female goes up to the top turnbuckle but Takahashi is back in the ring and hits Alpha Female.  Wakizawa then gets up, she joins Alpha Female on the top turnbuckle and hits a superplex.  Cover, but Alpha Female kicks out at two.  Wakizawa stomps Alpha Female, she goes up to the top turnbuckle but Kimura runs up on the apron and stops her.  Takahashi knocks Kimura out of the ring, while Alpha Female joins Wakizawa on the top turnbuckle.  Wakizawa quickly jumps down and sits Alpha Female on the top turnbuckle, Wakizawa then climbs back up and goes for a Frankensteiner, but Alpha Female catches her.  Kimura comes in the ring and holds Wakizawa, and Alpha Female comes off the top turnbuckle, slamming Wakizawa into the mat.  Cover, but Takahashi breaks it up.  Alpha Female picks up Wakizawa and hits a shoulder drop slam, cover, but again Takahashi breaks it up.  Alpha Female picks up Wakizawa and puts her on her shoulders, but Wakizawa gets off and hits a backslide for a two count.  Wakizawa and Takahashi put their opponents lying in the ring, they both go up to the top turnbuckle and go for diving body presses, but both Kimura and Alpha Female get their knees up.  Alpha Female hits a lariat onto Wakizawa, cover, but Wakizawa barely kicks out.  Alpha Female picks up Wakizawa and nails the Alpha Plex, and she picks up the three count.  Your winners and new champions:  Kyoko Kimura and Alpha Female

A solid match, but the clips in the action made it hard for the wrestlers to really get a good flow going as it was disjointed in parts.  Not that it is their fault, it is just the way the match was presented which is disappointing for a title match.  The wrestling was generally solid although a bit silly at times (such as the ketchup usage and Wakizawa doing a Frankensteiner on her own partner).  There wasn’t anything noticeably wrong with the match, the skipping just hurt the structure.  Mildly Recommended

(c) Act Yasukawa vs. Kairi Hojo

Wonder of Stardom Championship

Hojo wants to shake Yasukawa’s hand to start the match, Yasukawa won’t shake it so Hojo dropkicks her in the back instead.  Another dropkick by Hojo and she hits a third before stomping Yasukawa down in the corner.   Snapmare by Hojo and she hits an elbow drop.  Cover, but Yasukawa kicks out.  Hojo applies a single leg crab hold but Yasukawa quickly gets to the ropes to force a break.  Yasukawa slams Hojo into the turnbuckle, Irish whip by Yasukawa and she delivers a dropkick.  Yasukawa picks up Hojo and throws her against the ropes before choking her with her boot.  Yasukawa picks up Hojo, puts her over her shoulder and applies a submission hold.  Yasukawa releases it and picks up Hojo, but Hojo elbows her in the chest.  Hojo goes off the ropes and goes for a spear, but Yasukawa blocks it and spins Hojo to the mat.  Cover by Yasukawa but it gets two.  Yasukawa picks up Hojo and goes for a slam but Hojo slides down her back.  Clubs to the back by Hojo and she stomps Yasukawa.  Hojo goes off the ropes and hits a running neck whip, cover, but it gets a two count.  Cross-armed choke applied by Hojo and she stomps Yasukawa in the back.  Hojo goes up to the second turnbuckle but Yasukawa rolls out of the way of the diving elbow drop.  Yasukawa picks up Hojo and puts her on her shoulder, but Hojo rolls her up for a two count.  Crab hold by Hojo and she pulls it all the way, wrenching Yasukawa’s back.  Elbow drops to the back by Hojo, she covers Yasukawa but she gets a shoulder up.  Hojo picks up Yasukawa, Irish whip, reversed, and Yasukawa rolls up Hojo for a two count.  Yasukawa goes for the Stretch Muffler but her back gives out, preventing her from locking in the move.  Yasukawa picks up Hojo, Irish whip, reversed, and Hojo hits a running shoulder tackle.  Spear by Hojo, cover, but it gets two.

Hojo crosses Yasukawa’s legs and goes for a crab hold but Yasukawa quickly gets a hand on the ropes.  Stomps to the back by Hojo, she puts Yasukawa on her shoulders but Yasukawa hops off and elbows Hojo in the chest.  Hojo elbows her back and they trade strikes, which Yasukawa gets the better of.  Hojo gets back up and elbows Yasukawa against the ropes, double chop by Hojo and she goes off the ropes, but Yasukawa catches her and slams Hojo to the mat.  Cover, but it gets a two.  Yasukawa goes up to the top turnbuckle but Hojo recovers in time and throws her off the top turnbuckle to the mat.  Hojo then goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving elbow drop to Yasukawa’s back.  Cover, but Yasukawa gets a shoulder up.  Hojo crosses Yasukawa’s legs and cranks down, twisting Yasukawa’s back.  Yasukawa rakes Hojo in the face to break up the hold and hits Hojo in the head.  Hojo recovers first and elbows Yasukawa while they are still on their knees, and Hojo delivers a headbutt.  Cover, but  it only gets two.  Hojo picks up Yasukawa and elbows her in the head, she goes for another one but Yasukawa catches her with an STO.  Yasukawa goes up to the second turnbuckle and hits a rolling senton, cover, but Hojo gets a shoulder up.  Yasukawa picks up Hojo and puts her on her shoulder, but Hojo lands on her feet and elbows Yasukawa in the back of the head.  Jackknife hold by Hojo, but Yasukawa gets a foot on the ropes.  Hojo picks up Yasukawa, snapmare, she goes off the ropes but Yasukawa ducks the elbow and rolls her up for a two count.  Yasukawa quickly applies the Stretch Muffler, adding in a leg hook to apply more pressure.  Hojo fights it for several moments but she is stuck, and the referee calls for the bell! Your winner and still champion:  Act Yasukawa

This was a really good and well worked match.  The focus by Hojo on Yasukawa’s back was done really well as she never lost focus the entire match.  Yasukawa on her part also sold it the entire match and even failed to be able to apply her finishing move the first time because of it, something that I always enjoy seeing as it just shows that both wrestlers understand the psychology being used and won’t sacrifice that just to get a spot in.  Also the referee calling for the bell without Hojo submitting keeps her strong, as even though it was the right call she protested after the match and stayed crying in the ring while Yasukawa celebrated.  Just overall a really entertaining back and forth battle between these two.   Recommended

Well this was a match.  To get straight to the point I thought it was pretty amazing.  There were some little things here and there that didn’t work as they tried to get too cute, but considering the speed in which they go and having very little downtime some missteps here and there are expected.  It may stop the match from becoming an all-time classic but it doesn’t take away from all that they did right.  I have to admit any match with a perfect moonsault doublestomp automatically is good in my book, it is such an awesome looking move when hit properly like the second one was in this match.  I hadn’t seen either of these women before and Shirai is great fun to watch as she was just flying around everywhere.  They didn’t spend a lot of time with submission holds, just a few general ‘weaken your opponent’ ones and seemed content to just drop bombs and big moves on each other.  It felt like a big match, and it was as this was a big anniversary show for the promotion, so they were sure to end the event with a bang.  Overall just a great match, I can look past a few of the hiccups when a match is as exciting as this one, definitely a must-see.  Highly Recommended

All the matches below took place in NEO during the summer of 2009.

All wrestlers on the DVD have profiles on Joshi City, you can click on their names above to go straight to their profile for additional information.

kanaspecial2-1
Kana and Ayumi Kurihara vs. Kyoko Inoue and Hiroyo Matsumoto

Event:
NEO “Summer Stampede 2009”
Date: July 5th, 2009
Location: Tokyo Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 748

We kick off the DVD with a pair of matches for the Mid Summer Tag Tournament in NEO. This was the first tournament match on the show, pitting Kana and her friend Kurihara (known as a team as KanAyu) against veteran Kyoko Inoue and young wrestler Hiroyo Matsumoto. Kyoko was one of the top wrestlers in NEO in 2009, and while Hiroyo was only three years into her career she already had several title wins so she was no slouch either. Kanayu started teaming in 2009 so they were still a new team, they would continue tagging until Ayumi retired in 2013.

Ayumi and Hiroyo start things off, Hiroyo tosses Ayumi into the corner before squashing her with her rear end. Inoue comes in and they double team Ayumi, but Ayumi gets away from them as Kana comes in to help. With Ayumi in control now, she Irish whips Hiroyo but Hiroyo hits a shoulderblock. Sidewalk slam by Hiroyo, and she covers Ayumi for two. She tags Inoue but Ayumi avoids Inoue’s charge in the corner, she goes for a double knee but Inoue blocks it. Ayumi drop toeholds Inoue into the corner, Kana runs in and hits a hip attack but Ayumi delivers a dropkick. Kana and Ayumi both try to suplex Inoue but Inoue reverses it into a double vertical suplex, Inoue throws Ayumi into the corner but Ayumi applies an armbar over the top rope. Ayumi gets on the top turnbuckle but Hiroyo grabs her from the apron, Inoue joins Ayumi and Inoue hits a superplex. Cover by Inoue, but Ayumi gets a shoulder up. Back up they trade blows, vertical suplex by Inoue but Ayumi quickly gets back up only to eat another vertical suplex. Big lariat by Inoue, she goes for a powerbomb but Ayumi slides away and hits a fisherman suplex. Ayumi tags Kana and Kana comes in with a diving hip attack, Seated armbar by Kana and she goes for a cross armbreaker, but Inoue blocks it. Kana goes for a triangle choke instead but Inoue slides out of it and kicks Kana. Inoue quickly applies an ankle hold but Hiroyo breaks it up, Inoue knocks Kana against the corner but Ayumi snaps Inoue’s neck on the top rope.

Hip attack by Kana, she goes for a German suplex on Inoue but Inoue blocks it. Ayumi elbows Inoue to help but Inoue still blocks it, both Ayumi and Kana attack Inoue but Inoue lariats both of them. Inoue picks up Kana but Kana blocks the powerbomb, knee by Kana but Inoue hits another lariat and goes for the powerbomb again. Ayumi breaks it up but Inoue hits a double lariat before tagging in Hiroyo. Hiroyo elbows Kana, body avalanche by Hiroyo to Kana but Kana kicks her in the stomach. Kana tags Ayumi, Ayumi cradles Hiroyo but it gets two. Double knee facebreaker by Ayumi, Kana runs in and hits Hiroyo with a hip attack. Dropkick by Ayumi, Kana hits Hiroyo with a German suplex and Ayumi delivers a missile dropkick for two. Ayumi picks up Hiroyo and hits another double knee facebreaker, hip attack by Kana but Inoue breaks up Ayumi’s cover. Inoue tosses Kana out of the ring, Inoue and Hiroyo hit a double shoulderblock on Ayumi, they pick up Ayumi and swing her down to the mat. Hiroyo goes up top and hits a missile dropkick, cover by Hiroyo but it gets two. Hiroyo picks up Ayumi but Ayumi slides away, Inoue lariats Ayumi and Hiroyo hits a body avalanche for two. Inoue puts Ayumi on her shoulders and drops her back-first onto Hiroyo’s knee, Argentine Backbreaker by Hiroyo and she flips Ayumi into a gutbuster, but Ayumi barely kicks out. Backdrop Suplex by Hiroyo, but Kana breaks up the cover. Hiroyo picks up Inoue and goes for a Liger Bomb, but Ayumi reverses it into a cradle for the three count! Kana and Ayumi Kurihara win and advance in the tournament.

For an early match on the card this was good, but Kyoko Inoue really brought the match down. Inoue is known for being a bit selfish and she was at her worst here, winning just about every battle with Kana and Ayumi and giving them nothing. For example, Kana teased the German suplex on Inoue, Ayumi even came in to help, Kana tried again, but Inoue just lariats both of them and never gives that rub back. So that was disappointing, but the other three were fantastic and I really enjoyed it when they were the ones interacting. Ayumi was a great wrestler that sadly retired before I really got into Joshi, but I love going back and watching her. Kana of course was Kana, and Hiroyo’s moves have so much impact. A quality match that was dragged down by an uncooperative veteran.  Mildly Recommended

Kana and Ayumi Kurihara vs. Yoshiko Tamura and Fuka

Event:
NEO “Summer Stampede 2009”
Date: July 5th, 2009
Location: Tokyo Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 748

The next match on the DVD is part of the tournament on the same night as the previous match. In the Semi Final, Kana and Ayumi Kurihara face off against two of the better wrestlers in NEO – Yoshiko Tamura and Fuka. Tamura was the most successful wrestler in NEO history, with over 1,500 days holding either the singles or tag team championship. She retired when NEO closed on the last day of 2010. Fuka everyone knows today as the trainer in Stardom, she didn’t have the title success of her partner but gained a large following and produced many of her own shows. In the first round, Tamura and Fuka defeated Aya Yuki and Minori Makiba to reach the Semi Final.

Kana and Tamura start off, knees by Kana and they trade slaps back and forth. Kana gets Tamura to the mat but Tamura reverses positions with her, Kana gets Tamura in a headscissors and both wrestlers return to their feet to trade strikes again. Kana wins the battle and tags in Ayumi, dropkick by Ayumi and she elbows Tamura in the corner. Tamura elbows her back and they trade strikes, knees by Tamura but Ayumi puts her in an Octopus Hold. Fuka tries to break it up but Kana cuts her off and puts Fuka in a Scorpion Deathlock. Ayumi releases the hold after a moment, she goes off the ropes but Tamura catches her with a DDT and tags in Fuka. Fuka comes in the ring with a missile dropkick but Ayumi lands in her corner and tags in Kana, kicks by Kana to Fuka but Fuka kicks her in return and they trade blows. Kana wins that battle too and delivers a Buzzsaw Kick, she picks up Fuka but Fuka kicks her in the head for a two count cover. Fuka tags in Tamura, dropkick by Tamura to Kana and she hits a neckbreaker. Tamura goes to pick up Kana but Kana rolls her to the mat and hits a reverse DDT. Kana applies a choke but Fuka breaks it up, Kana goes for the German but Tamura blocks it. Ayumi runs in with a double knee facebuster to Tamura, and this time Kana is able to hit the release German on Tamura. Dropkick by Ayumi to Tamura, Kana follows with the hip attack but Fuka breaks up the cover. Kana picks up Tamura but Tamura elbows her off, Ayumi flies in with a missile dropkick but Fuka comes in and kicks both of them. Tamura takes out both Ayumi and Kana, Fuka comes in but she kicks Tamura by accident. Cradle by Kana to Tamura, but Tamura barely kicks out. Kana picks up Tamura but Tamura elbows her, Tamura swings Kana to the mat and rolls her up for two. Ayumi comes in but Tamura gets rid of her, Fuka grabs Ayumi while Tamura DDTs Kana. Tamura picks up Kana, Kana gets away but Fuka kicks Kana in the head. Running elbow smash by Tamura on Kana, and she picks up the three count! Yoshiko Tamura and Fuka win, advancing to the Finals of the tournament.

While this was a shorter match than the last one, it was certainly better. Tamura is the opposite of Inoue – those spots that Inoue wouldn’t do, Tamura actually did in this match even though she is the Ace of NEO. Kana won strike battles with Tamura and in general, Kana and Ayumi dominated the match. Tamura still showed that she was the best wrestler and overcame them to get the win, but it felt like a real battle, not like a veteran going through the motions. Fast paced with lots of solid strikes, everyone came out of it looking strong. Really entertaining match.  Recommended

Kana vs. Aya Yuki

Event:
NEO “Summer Night Fire 2009”
Date: July 25th, 2009
Location: Itabashi Green Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 113

Jumping ahead 20 days, Kana opened the second night of the Summer Night Fire tour against Aya Yuki. Aya is better known to many fans as Hatsuhinode Kamen, a more comedic wrestler that was a regular in Stardom for a couple years. She had a quiet career with only two title wins, however she hold the NEO Tag Team Championship toward the end of the promotion’s run.

Kana and Aya immediately start trading elbows, kicks by Kana but Aya hits a shoulderblock. Hip attack by Kana but Aya blocks the second one and stomps Kana to the mat. Shoulderblock by Aya and she applies a headlock, Kana gets out of it and they jockey for position. Kana gets in the mount and applies a guillotine but Aya gets out of it, Kana stays in dominate position and goes for Aya’s ankle, applying an ankle hold. Aya tries to reverse it but Kana blocks it and goes back to Aya’s leg, applying a single leg crab hold. Aya gets out of it and goes for Kana’s leg, Kana blocks that but Aya gets into the mount and elbows Kana repeatedly in the chest. They finally return to their feet, elbows by Kana and she hits a hip attack in the corner. Aya comes back with a hard shoulderblock, another one by Aya but Kana avoids the third and applies a front guillotine. Kana rolls Aya to the mat and applies a short armbar, Aya gets out of it and tosses Kana down before hitting a second turnbuckle diving shoulderblock for two. STF by Aya but Kana gets a hand on the bottom rope, Aya picks up Kana but Kana hits her with a hip attack. Schoolboy by Kana, Aya kicks out but Kana drops her with a reverse DDT. A high kick by Kana is blocked, vertical suplex by Aya and she hits a rolling fireman’s carry slam for two. Kana snaps off a German suplex hold, they trade slaps back on their feet until Aya boots Kana to the mat. Another kick by Aya, she goes off the ropes but Kana blocks the boot and hits a hard elbow. Kana puts Aya in the Wakigatame, really pulling back on the arm and Aya has no choice but to submit! Kana wins!

A pretty simple match, lots of mat work that didn’t go anywhere but as the opening match that wasn’t too surprising. Some of the ground game was pretty awkward, definitely not the smoothest and I was happy when they returned to their feet. Kana looked the better of the two with crisper strikes and a more entertaining variety of moves, I wouldn’t call it a bad match but it was certainly lacking in some areas. Worst match on the DVD so far, and from looking at the matches coming up I assume it will stay that way.

Kana, Natsuki Taiyo, and Nanae Takahashi vs. Kyoko Inoue, Hiroyo Matsumoto, and Fuka

Event:
NEO “Summer Night Fire 2009”
Date: August 8th, 2009
Location: Itabashi Green Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 165

The next night of the tour saw Kana teaming with Passion Red teammates Natsuki Taiyo and Nanae Takahashi. Passion Red formed in 2008 with these three as the founding members, they also promoted their own shows as well before Kana left the group in early 2010. They are against grumpy veteran Kyoko Inoue, the young but already impressive Hiroyo Matsumoto, and the striker Fuka. Since this was the main event of the show, I expect a bit more out of Inoue than we saw earlier and hopefully an entertaining match.

Kana and Fuka kick things off, they trade strikes and holds until Takahashi and Taiyo run in to help dropkick Fuka. Kana tags in Takahashi but Fuka gets Takahashi to the mat in an ankle hold, Hiroyo comes in and helps double team Takahashi. Inoue gets in on it too as Takahashi eats a double shoulderblock, but Takahashi grabs Hiroyo by the hair and throws her to the mat. They trade elbows, Irish whip by Takahashi and she hits a sidewalk slam on Hiroyo for two. She tags in Taiyo, dropkicks by Taiyo and she stands on Hiroyo in the corner. Taiyo goes up top and hits a missile dropkick, cover by Taiyo but it gets two. Hiroyo comes back with a lariat and a dropkick of her own, giving her time to tag in Inoue. Taiyo jumps over Inoue’s back and rolls up Inoue for two, she runs up the corner and goes for a crossbody, but Inoue ducks. Inoue stretches Taiyo but it gets broken up, Takahashi and Taiyo go to suplex Inoue but Inoue blocks it. Kana kicks Inoue from behind as Inoue tries to fight them off, Inoue avoid the triple dropkick and tags in Fuka. Fuka knees Taiyo but Taiyo dropkicks her and tags in Kana. Kicks by Kana but Fuka hits a pump kick, boot by Fuka and she covers Kana for a two count. Kicks by Fuka but Kana drop toeholds her into the corner before her teammates come in to help triple team Fuka. They leave after a moment, Kana goes for a hip attack but Fuka moves and kicks Kana in the head. Knees by Fuka but Kana catches her with a release German and tags in Taiyo. Running elbow by Taiyo, she avoids Fuka’s kicks and hits a leg sweep followed by a dropkick.

Fuka kicks Taiyo back, more kicks by Fuka before Hiroyo and Inoue both come in to beat down Taiyo. Taiyo is thrown in the corner but she avoids all three of her opponents, she knees Inoue before hitting an armdrag/dropkick combination out of the corner. Powerbomb by Taiyo to Fuka, but Fuka kicks out. Fuka comes back with a DDT, jumping knee by Fuka and she covers Taiyo for two. She tags in Hiroyo, missile dropkick by Hiroyo but Taiyo blocks the crab hold attempt. Taiyo spins away but Hiroyo hits a spinning gutbuster, crab hold by Hiroyo but Takahashi breaks it up. Elbows by Hiroyo, Taiyo tries to run over her back but Hiroyo briefly blocks it, Taiyo rolls her up anyway but it gets two. She makes the hot tag to Takahashi, Takahashi goes for a powerbomb on Hiroyo but Hiroyo back bodydrops out of it. Back up they trade elbows, hard shoulderblock by Hiroyo and Inoue comes in as they both hit lariats onto Takahashi. Inoue gets Takahashi on her shoulders and throws her back-first onto Hiroyo’s knee, gutbuster by Hiroyo and Inoue jumps on her back for a super double kneedrop. Hiroyo goes for a backdrop suplex but Takahashi elbows out of it, Fuka comes in and kicks Takahashi in the head, and Hiroyo delivers her backdrop suplex for a two count when the pin is broken up. Hiroyo tags in Inoue, Inoue and Takahashi trade elbows and then trade lariats, with Takahashi eventually lariating Inoue to the mat for two. Takahashi goes up top as Taiyo comes in but Inoue pushes Taiyo away and joins Takahashi. Superplex by Inoue to Takahashi, she goes up top as Hiroyo comes in the ring, but Takahashi fights off Hiroyo and joins Inoue, hitting a superplex of her own.

Taiyo then hits a diving body press onto Inoue, Takahashi follows with one of her own but Inoue barely kicks out. Inoue lariats Takahashi, she goes off the ropes but Kana runs in with a hip attack. Sliding Kick by Takahashi to Inoue, but her cover is broken up. Takahashi picks up Inoue and hits a backdrop suplex, cover by Takahashi but Inoue kicks out. Takahashi tags in Kana, diving hip attack by Kana and she schoolboys Inoue for two. Kana quickly applies an ankle hold but Fuka and Hiroyo break it up, Billiken by Kana but again the cover is broken up. Takahashi sails out of the ring onto Hiroyo with a tope suicida, while in the ring Kana puts Inoue in a choke. Inoue gets a toe on the ropes to break it up, Kana goes off the ropes but Inoue reverses the hip attack attempt with a release German suplex. Inoue picks up Kana but things break down as both teams run into the ring, Inoue and Kana are left alone and Inoue hits a lariat. Powerbomb by Inoue, but Taiyo breaks up the cover. Inoue picks up Kana again but Taiyo dropkicks her, Takahashi clears the ring and helps Kana with Inoue, Buzzsaw Kick by Kana to Inoue but the cover gets two. Kana picks up Inoue but Inoue hits a short range lariat, Inoue picks up Kana and nails the Niagara Driver for the three count! Kyoko Inoue, Hiroyo Matsumoto, and Fuka are the winners.

To give credit where credit is due – Inoue had on her working boots on this night (as much as she ever did at this point in her career) and bumped around quite a bit to help Passion Red look stronger. My main complaint about the match is a selfish one, as I just wish that Kana was in the match more since Takahashi did the bulk of the work. But I enjoyed much of what they did, Hiroyo and Inoue work really well together and had some quality sections, and Taiyo is always a bundle of constant motion. It wouldn’t have been a bad main event for a small show, but nothing really popped out as overly memorable even though it stayed entertaining from start to finish. A fun match from Passion Red.  Recommended

Kana, Nanae Takahashi, and Natsuki Taiyo vs.  Yoshiko Tamura, Mio Shirai, and Io Shirai

Event:
NEO “Summer Night Fire 2009”
Date: August 15th, 2009
Location: Itabashi Green Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 163

Unlike the last match, this one was in the midcard, but still has some heavy hitters. Kana is joined again by her Passion Red teammates, but their opponents are quite different than the week before. Yoshiko Tamura was the undisputed Ace of NEO and their top wrestler, she was no spring chicken in 2009 but hadn’t lost a step. She is joined by two sisters that current Joshi fans may be familiar with – Stardom’s Ace Io Shirai and the legendary Mio Shirai. Well, legendary to me. This was pretty early in both of their careers, as they were still honing their skills. Anytime I get to watch young Io and Mio I am excited, and since the match got plenty of time I have high expectations.

Kana and Mio start the match and immediately trade kicks, Irish whip by Kana but Mio delivers a dropkick and tags in Io. Io dropkicks Kana a few times but Kana swats one away and kicks Io in the back. Dropkick by Kana and she tags in Taiyo, and Taiyo throws down Io by the hair. Taiyo slides out to the apron, Io goes for a Tiger Feint Kick around the ring post but Taiyo moves and kicks Io out of the ring. Back in the ring, Taiyo stays in control before tagging in Takahashi, Taiyo comes in too and they triple team Io. Snapmare by Takahashi and she puts Io in a camel clutch, she lets go after a moment and applies a crab hold instead. Mio eventually comes in and breaks it up, Irish whip by Takahashi and she hits Io with a hard shoulderblock. Suplex by Takahashi, but Io breaks out of the cover. Takahashi tags in Kana, Irish whip by Kana but Io hits a crossbody and tags in Tamura. Knees by Tamura, Kana fights back and takes Tamura to the mat, but Tamura puts her in an armbar. Kana manages to roll out of it and applies a guillotine, dropkick by Kana and she tags Takahashi. Takahashi stomps on Tamura but Tamura kicks her back and drops Takahashi with an Ace Crusher. Knees by Tamura and she tags in Mio, dropkick by Mio to Takahashi but Takahashi absorbs the blow and elbows Mio. Body Avalanche by Takahashi in the corner but Mio blocks her second attempt and kicks Takahashi. Takahashi catches one and the two trade blows, backdrop suplex by Takahashi and she covers Mio for two. Taiyo grabs Mio from the apron and Mio eats a triple dropkick, they all end up on the floor and Taiyo dives out onto the crowd with a triple jump plancha, but she ends up only landing on her own partners.

Io then goes up top and dives out onto Passion Red with a plancha of her own, Takahashi is slide into the ring and triple teamed until Tamura and Io finally go back to the apron. Tornado DDT by Mio out of the corner, and she tags in Tamura. Dropkick by Tamura and she plants Takahashi with a DDT, knees by Takahashi but Tamura knees her back and hits a cutter. Tamura charges Takahashi in the corner but Takahashi avoids her and hits a release German suplex, Takahashi goes for a backdrop suplex but Tamura blocks it. Lariat by Takahashi but Tamura fires back with an elbow smash, jumping kick by Takahashi and she tags in Kana. Kana kicks Tamura and applies a schoolboy into an ankle hold, but Tamura gets to the ropes for the break. Kana goes for an Irish whip but Tamura blocks it and applies a kneelock, Kana inches to the ropes and makes it for the break. Suplex by Tamura, she picks up Kana but Kana hits a reverse DDT for two. Elbows by Tamura but Kana returns fire with kicks, cover by Kana but Mio breaks it up. Kana drags up Tamura and hits a German suplex hold, she quickly applies a Wakigatame but Tamura gets a foot on the ropes. Io and Mio run in and kick Kana, Tamura picks up Kana and hits a DDT. Full nelson slam by Tamura, but Takahashi breaks up the cover. Tamura tags in Io, Irish whip by Io to the corner and Mio hits a jumping knee on Kana. Tamura hits a knee as well before Io follows with a Space Rolling Elbow and a face crusher.

Armtrap Crossface by Io, but Takahashi comes in and breaks it up. Kana slaps Io, Io slaps her back but Kana catches her with a hip attack. Another hip attack by Kana and she kicks Io repeatedly before pushing her against the ropes with her boot. Sliding hip attack by Kana, she covers Io but she gets a shoulder up. Kana tags in Taiyo, missile dropkick by Taiyo and she delivers the Iguchi Bomb for two. Taiyo goes for a kick but Io avoids it and rolls up Taiyo, Tamura snaps Taiyo’s neck on the top rope before Io hits a springboard body press. Swandive dropkick by Io and she delivers a Tiger Feint Kick for two. Io tags in Mio, kicks by Mio to Taiyo and she hits a STO for a two count. Kick by Mio but Taiyo avoids the next one, she goes for the Iguchi Bomb but Io runs in to help Mio block it. Mio and Io both slam Taiyo before Tamura dropkicks her, Mio picks up Taiyo and kicks her some more, but Taiyo dropkicks Mio in the knee. Heel kick by Mio in the corner, Kana goes up top and jumps off with a diving hip attack onto Mio. Jackknife cover by Taiyo, but Tamura breaks it up. Taiyo goes up top but Mio kicks her and pulls Taiyo back to the mat, Tamura elbows Taiyo and Mio follows with a high kick. Io comes in and they hit the assisted DDT, Tamura then goes up top and hits a somersault senton, but Takahashi breaks up Mio’s cover. Mio picks up Taiyo but Taiyo ducks the enzuigiri and cradles Mio for two. Thrust kick by Taiyo, but Io breaks up her cover. Kana and Taiyo get on the second turnbuckle and lariat Mio while Taiyo hits a powerbomb, diving body press by Taiyo and she picks up the three count! Passion Red win the match!

This one was missing something from the last match I can’t put my finger on, but it was still a good match. Young Io and Mio are always entertaining, they aren’t necessarily refined yet but all the pieces are there. I think the match just had too many parts where they appeared to not know what was next or they were filling time, lots of stomping/kicking sections that felt like filler. Not everything felt like it had a purpose, and parts of the middle dragged. But it really picked up by the end and I like that both teams worked together so well, like they were real units and not just randomly thrown together for a match. The wrestler quality was certainly there and generally the action was exciting, but it definitely felt more like a midcard match (which it was) than a main event.  Mildly Recommended

As a fan of just about anything, you tend to get sad when someone you enjoy retires. That is true for actors, sports players, and of course in this case wrestlers. Generally you are happy for them as usually people retire to move on to something else they want to do, but we still miss them. This event is for the retirement of Natsuki*Taiyo, who had been wrestling for ten years. It is not uncommon in Joshi for wrestlers to retire when still in their 20s (Taiyo had just turned 30), a lot of them start young but burn out early, leaving either to pursue their career or to start a family. So we are happy to have had her, and sad to see her go. Here is the full card for the event:

All the Joshi wrestlers above profiles on the website, you can click on their names to go straight to it.

Kyoko Kimura is eliminated. Your winners of the match: Yoshiko, Act Yasukawa, Kairi Hojo, and Koguma

For a 15 minute eight wrestler elimination tag match this was fine. My main complaint would simply be that this match had some of my favorite Stardom wrestlers (Hojo, Yasukawa, Kimura, and Alpha Female) but obviously in this style of match they really didn’t get much of a chance to shine. I’d rather have seen them get more time to do something. Having Dino in the match was fun since 80% of his offense is normally gay-based which doesn’t really work on women. But he was the first one eliminated and after that it was just your standard action in these types of matches. It was nothing bad since the wrestlers in the match were quality, it is just a limiting match stipulation that gave them more restrictions than I’d have preferred.

(c) Miho Wakizawa, Matsumoto, and Mayu Iwatani vs. Kaori Yoneyama, Hatsuhinode Kamen, and Obihiro
Artist of Stardom Championship

Yoneyama and company attack their opponents to start the match and they all attack Iwatani together before making a little pyramid with her. Matsumoto is having none of that and pelts all three with tawashis (see below for what the hell a tawashis is, y’all about to get educated), then they hit Kamen and Yoneyama with ribbons. Obihiro is put into the ropes so they can wrap the ribbons around her before running into the crowd to I assume try to kill her, but the ribbon snaps which sends everyone flying. This never works. Back in the ring Obihiro and Kamen hit running strikes on Iwatani in the corner, Obihiro goes up to the top turnbuckle and she hits a diving double chop. Cover, but it gets a two count. Obihiro chops Iwatani against the ropes, Irish whip, blocked, and Iwatani flips Obihiro to the mat. She applies a submission but it is quickly broken up, Iwatani goes off the ropes but Obihiro hits a sunset flip for a two count. Yoneyama grabs Iwatani and applies a leg submission but Wakizawa uses a rope to try to help Iwatani to the ropes. This doesn’t work of course, Irish whip by Yoneyama to Iwatani but Iwatani hits a tilt-a-whirl headscissors. Kamen comes in the ring but Iwatani hits a springboard armdrag on both of them before tagging in Matsumoto. Matsumoto shoulderblocks all three of her opponents, Irish whip by Matsumoto to Yoneyama and she slams Yoneyama to the mat. Cover, but Yoneyama quickly gets out of it. Backdrop suplex by Matsumoto, but it only gets a two count. Matsumoto tags in Wakizawa, Matsumoto holds Yoneyama for Wakizawa but Yoneyama ducks and Wakizawa puts The Claw on Matsumoto.

Obihiro comes in the ring but Wakizawa bites her in the hand, Kamen kicks Wakizawa in the head but she only gets a two count. Kamen goes up to the top turnbuckle but Wakizawa recovers and joins her up top while Matsumoto dumps a box full of tawashis in the ring. Wakizawa hits a Frankensteiner into the pile, then Iwatani gets a big one and holds it against Kamen. Matsumoto charges in with a body avalanche, which hurts her just as much. Dropkick by Iwatani to Kamen, and Matsumoto puts the mega tawashi on her chest. Wakizawa and Iwatani get onto Matsumoto’s back and they all fall onto Kamen. Wakizawa goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving body press onto Kamen, cover, but Obihiro breaks it up. Wakizawa picks up Kamen and she goes for a Fisherman Buster but Kamen blocks it. Kamen goes for a vertical suplex onto the mega tawashi, but Iwatani slides in and moves it so that Kamen actually lands on it and not Wakizawa. Wakizawa picks it up but Yoneyama grabs the tawashi from behind. Obihiro runs in and chops Wakizawa in the throat, inside cradle by Kamen but it gets a two count. Yoneyama throws the tawashi out of the ring, while in the ring Kamen puts Wakizawa on her shoulders. Yoneyama goes up top but Matsumoto hits her from the apron with a different tawashi, Backslide with Venom by Wakizawa to Kamen and she picks up the three count. Your winners and still champions: Wakizawa, Matsumoto, and Iwatani!

True story – I have been wondering for the last year what those little brown balls they use in these matches were, but I looked online and no one seemed to reference what they were. I mean its not like there are tons of Stardom reviews in English on the Internet. So I finally figured I’d just ask one of the wrestlers and hope for a reply. I tweeted Kellie Skater, and within a few hours she advised that they are tawashis. A tawashi is a hard, rough scrubbing brush, so when they are rubbed against someone’s skin, as you can imagine that would hurt. So thanks to Kellie for answering this question that has been bothering Stardom fans for a long time. Anyway, as far as the match, it was pretty much the same as it always is, except at least now I know what is going on. I am glad these matches aren’t too long since they are generally comedy matches, and they did get a few chuckles out of me such as when Kamen accidentally landed on the tawashi when going for the vertical suplex. I think a few of these wrestlers actually are good but its so hard to tell in short comedy matches, all the action was crisp anyway. Exactly what you’d expect, I can’t score it low since it does what it is trying to do and it is funny at times, but it isn’t what I would consider high quality wrestling.

(c) Io Shirai vs. Takumi Iroha

Kick to the head by Shirai, she picks up Iroha and hits a series of elbows. Iroha elbows Shirai as well and both wrestlers fall to their knees. Waistlock by Shirai, reversed by Iroha and Iroha applies a side headlock. Shirai eventually punches out of it and applies a side headlock of her own, Iroha gets out of it but Shirai hits a cartwheel dropkick. Iroha falls out of the ring, Shirai goes off the far ropes and sails between the ropes onto Iroha with a plancha suicida. Shirai slides Iroha back into the ring and applies a stretch hold before throwing Iroha to the mat. Kicks to the face by Shirai and she chokes Iroha with her boot. Shirai goes up to the top turnbuckle but Iroha runs over and dropkicks her off, sending Shirai to the apron. Iroha goes out to the apron as well and chops Shirai repeatedly in the chest. Waistlock by Iroha but Shirai slides through her legs and hits a reverse DDT on the apron. Shirai goes up to the top turnbuckle and dives out to the floor with a plancha onto Iroha. Iroha recovers as she is pulled back to the ring and elbows Shirai before hitting a vertical suplex on the floor. Iroha slides Shirai back into the ring and applies a crab hold, but Shirai makes it to the ropes to force the break. Iroha stomps Shirai and charges her in the corner, but Shirai slides out to the apron and kicks her back. Shirai goes for a swandive move but Iroha uppercuts her mid-move and then hits a doublestomp to her back while Shirai is lying over the ropes. Cover, but it gets two. Iroha picks up Shirai and applies the Gory Special, she then releases the hold and goes for Shirai’s leg but Shirai kicks her back.

Arm trap crossface by Shirai but Iroha inches to the ropes and gets there to get the break. Shirai picks up Iroha, she puts Iroha on the second rope and hits the Tiger Feint Kick. Swandive missile dropkick by Shirai, cover, but it gets a two count. Shirai positions Iroha in front of the corner, she goes up to the second turnbuckle but Iroha has recovered and hits her from behind. Slingshot suplex by Iroha and she holds on to Shirai to hit a second suplex, cover, but it gets a two count. Iroha picks up Shirai around the waist but Shirai elbows free, Shirai goes off the ropes and goes for a hurricanrana but Iroha blocks it and applies a crab hold. Shirai slowly inches to the ropes and eventually makes it there to force a break. Iroha positions Shirai, she goes up to the top turnbuckle but Shirai has slid out to the apron. Shirai climbs up top with Iroha and they trade punches and elbows. High kick by Shirai, she slides back out to the apron and then springboards back up to the top to hit a Frankensteiner. Standing moonsault by Shirai, then she hits a moonsault off the second turnbuckle and finally one off the top turnbuckle. Cover, but Iroha gets a shoulder up. Shirai picks up Iroha and hits the Shining Wizard. Cover, but it gets a two count. Shirai goes for a swinging kick but Iroha ducks it and hits a German suplex hold for a two count. Iroha goes for a Scorpion Deathlock but Shirai rolls through it and kicked Iroha in the face. La Magistral by Shirai, but Iroha kicks out at two. Elbow by Shirai but Iroha elbows her back and they trade shots back on their feet. Uppercut by Shirai but Iroha slaps her, but Shirai turns around and hits a running headbutt. Package German Suplex Hold by Shirai, and she picks up the three count. Your winner and still champion: Io Shirai

There must be some backstory on how Iroha got a title shot considering how young and inexperienced she is, but looking over the results I couldn’t get any clues. But it made for a good superstar vs. underdog dynamic, even if you knew that Iroha had no chance of winning. That hurt the crowd reactions a bit but it was still a really good match. From watching it you’d know that Iroha was an underdog but she didn’t act over-matched at all, she was exchanging strikes and getting nearfalls the same as any other challenger. Shirai didn’t take it easy either, which she could have done since this event already had a major attraction, as she was doing dives and spring boarding off of things just like she always does. Even with Iroha’s more limited experience the match was really crisp, I didn’t notice any awkward moments, and the match flowed really well with no real downtime. A predictable ending but a fun journey to get there for sure.  Recommended

Natsuki*Taiyo vs. Nanae Takahashi

stardom6-1-4aThis is Natsuki*Taiyo’s Retirement Match. They lock knuckles to start, side headlock by Taiyo but Takahashi gets out of it. The match was probably a little bit longer than it needed to be as some parts of the match did drag (such as the battling up in the crowd section), but overall it was still a really good match. I have no idea how Taiyo can even concentrate as retirement matches can be so emotional, but for the most part the action was very crisp and fluid. The early limb work was ultimately blown off, but the limbs weren’t really targeted long enough to expect them to sell it for the rest of the match, so I won’t hold it against them. Taiyo has so much energy, even after a 30 minute match she was still springboarding around, things like that is why everyone loved her… she just has more gears than most humans do. Even though she lost, Taiyo didn’t go down easy as she took most of Takahashi’s big moves, some of them twice. Overall it was a fitting ending, shame she couldn’t get the win but generally in Japan wrestlers lose in their official retirement matches, that is just the way it goes. An emotional and exciting ending to the career of the original High Speed Champion.  Recommended

Natsuki*Taiyo’s Retirement Ceremony

stardom6-1-6I am not going to do a play by play of a Retirement Ceremony, but if you’ve never watched a Joshi Retirement Ceremony you really should sometime. First of all, from start to finish it was over 40 minutes long. It had a bit of everything, first Taiyo talked for a bit, they did some dancing, then all the Stardom wrestlers came down and gave Taiyo flowers one by one. It is pretty emotional as everyone is crying, so if you are an emotional person like me, don’t watch this with anyone else in the room as it will be really hard to explain. Along with the Stardom wrestlers, many legends came down to wish her well also, including Bull Nakano and Momoe Nakanishi. Some just gave flowers, some playfully attacked her, it likely depended on her personal relationships with them. Animal Hamaguchi came out last which got Taiyo the most emotional as he helped train her, and he talked a bit before leading the crowd in a cheer. It ends with everyone leaving the ring as the lights go down, and Taiyo gets her final farewell. Its a much more… personal retirement than most wrestlers get but its normal for long-time (and well liked) Joshi wrestlers. Probably too long for the common fan to sit through, especially if you don’t speak Japanese, but it does show that they know how to send people out the right way. I can’t imagine trying to do a wrestling match knowing all of this is coming, but that is why they are professionals and I just watch them while politely judging everything they do. But it was a really nice ceremony and you could tell from the emotions how much people will miss Taiyo, she was the life of Stardom at times and she will be hard to replace.

Event: Sendai Girls’
Date: April 26th, 2014
Location: Shin-Kiba 1st RING in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 400

You are probably wondering why I am reviewing a random show from three years ago. Well I’ll tell you. Io Shirai and Meiko Satomura have had four singles matches, three of which we have all seen as they took place on big events in Stardom and Sendai Girls’, respectively. Then there was this match on a smaller show in the Spring of 2014, which did not make TV. They did release the match, but not as a standalone show, but rather on a “Best Of” DVD that had matches from three different events ranging from 2013 to 2014. I didn’t really care too much about the other events, although I’ll watch them later, I just wanted to see the forgotten Meiko Satomura vs. Io Shirai match. And now I will! But there were two other matches on the event that were on the DVD so I am going to watch them also so that this isn’t a really short review, here are the matches:

I realize this review won’t get a lot of “clicks” but I figured I’d review it in case others were curious how the first encounter between Meiko Satomura and Io Shirai went, before Io became the unquestionable Ace of Stardom.

sendai4-26-1
Kagetsu vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto

While Kagetsu and Hiroyo Matsumoto are household names today, in 2014 they were not quite on the level that they currently are. Kagetsu debuted back in 2008 but had only won one title at this point in career, as while she had risen to being the #2 wrestler in Sendai Girls’ she was having issues getting over the hump (she still couldn’t beat Meiko). She would actually leave Sendai Girls’ at the end of 2014, and her career has blossomed since then. Unlike Kagetsu, Hiroyo had already seen success by early 2014 (mostly in the tag division in OZ Academy), however she had yet to get a big singles title reign as she was mostly a tag team wrestler. Today she is one of the best wrestlers in all of Joshi and held two major singles championships this year, so both of their careers took an upswing since this show took place.

Before the match can even start, Kagetsu dropkicks Hiroyo as she gets into the ring, sending her back out onto the floor. Kagetsu quickly hits a swandive plancha down onto Hiroyo, she slides Hiroyo back into the ring and goes for another swandive but Hiroyo grabs her and tosses Kagetsu to the mat. Hiroyo boots Kagetsu and the two trade elbows, headlock by Kagetsu but Hiroyo reverses it. Kagetsu gets out of the headlock and hits a Samoan Drop, snapmare by Kagetsu and she kicks Hiroyo in the back before applying a sleeper. Grounded front necklock by Kagetsu but Hiroyo muscles up and drives Kagetsu into the corner. Boot by Hiroyo and she throws Kagetsu into the other corner, stomps by Hiroyo and she hits a scoop slam. Neck crank by Hiroyo and she hits a double kneedrop, another one by Hiroyo and she dropkicks Kagetsu in the head for a two count cover. Hiroyo stomps Kagetsu but Kagetsu fires back with an elbow, Hiroyo decks Kagetsu with an elbow of her own and she hits a front suplex. Hiroyo lays Kagetsu across the middle rope in the corner and hits a body avalanche, she goes for a reverse splash but Kagetsu gets her knees up. Kicks to the chest by Kagetsu but Hiroyo slides out to the apron and snaps Kagetsu’s neck on the top rope. Kagetsu dropkicks Hiroyo out of the ring while she is still on the apron, Kagetsu goes up top but Hiroyo elbows her off the top turnbuckle down to the floor. Hiroyo goes out after her and tosses Kagetsu into the front row, she goes for a powerbomb but Kagetsu wiggles out of it. Hiroyo goes to splash Kagetsu against the ring post but Kagetsu moves, she then rams Hiroyo’s arm into the post before dropkicking it.

sendai2014-1Kagetsu slides Hiroyo back in, swandive footstomp to Hiroyo’s arm by Kagetsu and she hits a deadlift vertical suplex. Running knees by Kagetsu in the corner and she puts Hiroyo in an arm submission. Hiroyo gets into the ropes to force a break, Kagetsu picks up Hiroyo but Hiroyo slides away and applies a waistlock. Kagetsu gets out of it with an armbreaker, she goes to run off the ropes but Hiroyo grabs her from behind and hits a backdrop suplex. Hiroyo goes for a roaring elbow but Kagetsu blocks it, elbows by Kagetsu but Hiroyo elbows her back. Hiroyo goes for a lariat but Kagetsu kicks her arm and applies a short armbar. Hiroyo muscles out of it and hits a gutbuster, reverse double kneedrop by Hiroyo out of the corner and she covers Kagetsu for two. Hiroyo goes up top but Kagetsu joins her, elbows by Kagetsu but Hiroyo slides through her legs and goes for a powerbomb. Kagetsu reverses the powerbomb with a sunset flip, she rolls Hiroyo to the mat and cradles her for two. Head kick by Kagetsu, but Hiroyo kicks out of the cover. Kagetsu picks up Hiroyo but Hiroyo snaps off a backdrop driver, she picks up Kagetsu and goes for a powerbomb, but Kagetsu reverses it into an Ebisu Drop for two. Kagetsu goes for a high kick but Hiroyo ducks it, they trade elbows until Kagetsu delivers a dropkick. Another Ebisu Drop by Kagetsu, but it only gets a two count. Kagetsu charges Hiroyo but Hiroyo nails her with a back elbow, sit-down powerbomb by Hiroyo and she gets the three count! Hiroyo Matsumoto wins the match.

For an untelevised midcard match, these two went all out. There is very little to find fault of here, I loved Kagetsu’s arm work and that she went back it several times, and the story of her trying to take down the stronger Hiroyo that was always one big move away from winning was well done. Kagetsu kept reversing Hiroyo’s signature moves since any of them may lead to defeat, and once Hiroyo hit two in a row you knew the match was over. Kagetsu showed a lot of heart though, and they have fantastic chemistry. I was expecting a good match but not one this entertaining, just a really fun match from bell to bell with no time wasted. Track it down if you can.  Highly Recommended

DASH Chisako and KAORU vs. Natsuki Taiyo and Yoshiko

With the next match in mind as well, this card really had a Sendai Girls’ vs. Stardom focus. At the time of the match, KAORU had recently returned from a three year break from wrestling, she was a Freelancer and wasn’t a regular in Sendai Girls at the time. Her teaming with Chisako is interesting since they were not a regular tag team, as normally Chisako teamed with her sister Sendai Sachiko. On the other side were two Stardom wrestlers, Natsuki was the High Speed Champion at the time of the match while Yoshiko had most recently held the Goddesses of Stardom Championship with Natsuki in 2013. Yoshiko and Natsuki had the experience edge as a tag team, but the crowd is behind their opponents and KAORU has been wrestling a long time so she is never easy to beat.

The Stardom team attacks before the match starts, Chisako is quickly isolated and double teamed by Natsuki and Yoshiko. Yoshiko tosses Chisako down by the hair and gives her bootscrapes in the corner, but Chisako avoids her running boot and delivers a dropkick. Another dropkick by Chisako and she tags in KAORU, KAORU and Yoshiko circle each other before they start trading strikes. KAORU goes off the ropes and hits a hurricanrana, but Yoshiko kicks out at two. KAORU tags Chisako, running boots by Chisako and she dropkicks Yoshiko against the ropes. Irish whip by Chisako but Yoshiko hits a hard shoulderblock, she tags in Natsuki and Natsuki immediately goes to work on Chisako. Dropkick by Natsuki and she works on Chisako’s arm, Chisako gets away and elbows her but Natsuki kicks her arm and tags Yoshiko. Yoshiko picks up where Natsuki left off as she twists Chisako’s arm in the top rope, Natsuki comes back in and they double team Chisako. Natsuki returns as the legal wrestler, kicks by Natsuki but Chisako knees her and hits a couple running footstomps. Chisako makes the tag to KAORU, KAORU picks up Natsuki and KAORU boots Natsuki in the head. KAORU gets her board and hits Natsuki in the head with it, another strike by KAORU and she hits a vertical suplex onto the board. Cover by KAORU, but the referee won’t count due to the shenanigans.

sendai2014-2KAORU gets on the second turnbuckle with her board but the referee takes it from her, Chisako hands her another board but Natsuki kicks it into KAORU’s chest. Kick combination by Natsuki and she tags in Yoshiko, running senton by Yoshiko and she covers KAORU for two. Cobra Twist by Yoshiko but Chisako breaks it up, scoop slam by Yoshiko to KAORU and she hits a body press. Yoshiko bridges out of the cover and hits Yoshiko with her board, Michinoku Driver by KAORU but Yoshiko gets a shoulder up. KAORU tags Chisako, missile dropkick by Chisako and she dropkicks Yoshiko in the corner. Yoshiko picks up Chisako but Chisako slides away, she goes off the ropes but Yoshiko catches her with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. She goes for a running senton but Chisako rolls out of the way, Chisako and Yoshiko trade elbows but Natsuki comes in to help Yoshiko get the advantage. Assisted body press by Yoshiko, but the pin gets a two count. Samoan Drop by Yoshiko, she gets on the second turnbuckle but Chisako avoids the diving senton. Flipping neckbreaker by Chisako, she mounts Yoshiko in the corner and dropkicks her in the chest. Cutter by Chisako, and she covers Yoshiko for two.

Chisako gets on the top turnbuckle but Yoshiko gets her feet up on the Hormone Splash, Yoshiko picks up Chisako and hits a short range lariat for two. Yoshiko tags Natsuki, Iguchi Bomb by Natsuki and she hits a second one. Thrust kick by Natsuki, but the cover gets two. Natsuki goes up top but Chisako avoids the footstomp and dropkicks Natsuki in the knee. Back up, Chisako and Natsuki trade elbows until Chisako dropkicks Natsuki out of the ring. Natsuki skins the cat and hits a release German on Chisako, she picks her up and goes for the Taiyo-chan Bomb, but KAORU hits her in the head with the board as she is in the middle of the move. KAORU grabs Chisako and tosses her onto Natsuki, she puts the board on Natsuki and Chisako hits a couple running footstomps. Double vertical suplex to Natsuki, KAORU goes up top and nails the Valkyrie Splash. Hormone Splash by Chisako, but Yoshiko breaks up the pin. Chisako goes off the ropes but Yoshiko intercepts her, KAORU hits Yoshiko with her board and positions Natsuki, but Yoshiko kicks her from behind. Natsuki joins Chisako up top, KAORU comes in with the board but Yoshiko takes it from her. Chisako headbutts Natsuki off the top turnbuckle but Yoshiko catches her and tosses Natsuki back up, avalanche armdrag by Natsuki and she hits a missile dropkick to a downed Chisako, but KAORU breaks up the cover. Natsuki picks up Chisako and with Yoshiko they drop her with an assisted Codebreaker, but Chisako gets a shoulder up. Natsuki drags up Chisako and nails a leg clutch German Suplex Hold, and she picks up the three count! Natsuki Taiyo and Yoshiko win!

While the match was far from perfect, it was certainly exciting and fast paced. My only complaint is the arm work on Chisako, it just went a bit longer than your traditional “intro” limb work but was very quickly forgotten, I don’t mind limb targeting but if it lasts more than a few minutes I’d like some type of callback to it later. Still, all four of these wrestlers are great and every time I watch Natsuki Taiyo I just remember how much I miss her. Both teams showed flawless teamwork as they felt like units and not individuals thrown together, and the ending stretch was fantastic. An entertaining match.  Recommended

Io Shirai vs. Meiko Satomura

Now we have reached the reason I imported the DVD from Japan – the forgotten Io vs. Meiko match. I call it the “forgotten” match simply because it never made tape (a lot of Sendai Girls’ events don’t but that was especially true a few years ago) and this was their first encounter before their feud had really gotten started. Meiko Satomura had wrestled in Stardom in 2012 and 2013, and even got a title challenge against Nanae Takahashi, but this match was prior to her title run in Stardom which didn’t take place until 2015. Io Shirai was starting to show some Ace-like qualities at this stage of her career but she wasn’t quite there yet, she came into this match holding the World of Stardom Championship, however this was not a title match.

They lock knuckles to start as they feel each other out, armdrag by Io and she takes Meiko down, but Meiko quickly gets out of it and applies a side headlock. Front necklock by Meiko but Io gets out of the hold and dropkicks Meiko, leading to both wrestlers returning to their feet. Camel Clutch by Io and she then applies a bodyscissors, Meiko gets out of it and Io elbows Meiko into the corner. Double knee by Io, she charges Meiko and hits the Space Rolling Elbow. Face crusher by Io, she picks up Meiko but Meiko elbows her into the corner.  Jumping elbow by Meiko, she armdrags Io to the mat and puts her in a crab hold. She reverts the hold into a STF but Io gets to the ropes to force a break. Wristlock by Meiko and she elbows Io in the arm, Io goes off the ropes and does a backflip before elbowing Meiko out of the ring. Io goes to do a dive but Meiko meets her at the ropes with an elbow, slingshot footstomp by Meiko and she knocks Io to the floor. Meiko kicks Io from the apron before tosses Io back in, Meiko slams Io to the mat before hitting a snap vertical suplex. Meiko and Io trade elbows until Meiko kicks Io to the mat, Meiko goes off the ropes but Io bridges down to avoid her elbow. Meiko kicks her leg out from under her and puts her in a modified STF, but again Io gets to the ropes. Meiko goes off the ropes but Io drop toeholds her and delivers the Tiger Feint Kick. Swandive dropkick by Io, and she puts Meiko in an armtrap crossface. Meiko struggles and and gets a foot on the bottom rope for the break, Io charges Meiko in the corner and hits the double knee for a two count. Meiko goes for a suplex but Io lands on her feet, high kick by Meiko and she hits the cartwheel kneedrop.

sendai2014-3Seated armbar by Meiko, but Io quickly gets a hand on the ropes. Kicks by Meiko but Io gets back to her feet and they trade elbows until Meiko knocks down Io with an uppercut. Meiko goes up top but Io recovers and dropkicks her off the turnbuckle down to the floor. Io goes up top and dives down onto Meiko with a moonsault, Io picks up Meiko and slides her back into the ring. Io goes up top and delivers a missile dropkick, cover by Io but it gets a two count. Standing moonsault by Io, she then hits moonsaults from the second turnbuckle and top turnbuckle, but Meiko gets a shoulder up on the cover. Io picks up Meiko and goes for the package German, but Meiko gets out of it and drops Io on her head with a backdrop suplex. Thrust kick by Meiko, she goes off the ropes but Io catches her with a hurricanrana for two. Buzzsaw kick by Io, she goes up top but Meiko recovers and kicks her into a hanging position. Pele Kick by Meiko, she picks up Io but Io blocks the Death Valley Bomb. She goes for Magica de Io but Meiko blocks it and kicks Io in the head, sleeper by Meiko but Io gets a foot on the bottom rope. She goes for the sleeper again but Io spins out of it, palm strike by Io but Meiko nails her with a Pele Kick. Io again gets out of the Death Valley Bomb, she drops Meiko with a package German but Meiko kicks out. Both wrestlers slowly get up, Io goes for a hurricanrana but Meiko blocks it and hits a Death Valley Bomb. Meiko quickly puts Io in a sleeper, cover by Meiko but it only gets a two count. Meiko drags Io up and nails another Death Valley Bomb, cover by Meiko and she gets the three count! Meiko Satomura is your winner!

To the shock of no one reading this, I really enjoyed this match. This is the first time they had ever faced off but they already had great chemistry. Part of that is because Meiko Satomura in 2014 was one of the top wrestlers in the world (she still is), she can mesh well with just about anyone, and even the few times something looked slightly off she quickly got the match back on track. Io tried a few times going for her flashy moves with no luck, as Meiko doesn’t play around, but she did eventually have success and she almost had Meiko beaten on several occasions. A very tight, hard hitting, and entertaining match, and an early sign that these two worked together extremely well which lead to perhaps even better matches down the road.  Highly Recommended

Event: Stardom Champion Fiesta 2013 Ryogoku Cinderella
Date: April 29th, 2013
Location: Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 5,500

After watching New Japan’s Wrestle Kingdom, I got inspired to watch and review one of the biggest Joshi show of the last decade. Joshi promotions rarely run Sumo Hall, one of the most famous venues for professional wrestling, due to the obvious reason that Sumo Hall is huge and most promotions in general struggle to fill it enough to make the venture profitable. Stardom decided to take a chance in 2013, however, as one of the most popular and “recognizable outside the wrestling bubble” Joshi stars was having her retirement match. Before she started wrestling, Yuzuki Aikawa was a famous model in Japan and was also in an idol group. She joined Stardom in 2010, and instantly gained an even bigger following as a combination of her looks, charisma, and fighting spirit made her the most visible new Joshi star of that (brief) time period. This is why after wrestling for less than three years, she was having her Retirement Match at Sumo Hall and not a smaller venue, she exploded onto the scene and left while she was still at the top of her game. Stardom stacked the entire show for the special occasion, here is the full card:

  • Risa Sera and Rutsuko Yamaguchi vs. Yui Yokoo and Sumire Yoshino
  • Manami Toyota vs. Miho Wakizawa
  • Kota Ibushi, Gota Ihashi, Lin Byron, and Mayu Iwatani vs. Michael Nakazawa, Hikaru Sato, Makoto, and Eri Susa
  • Meiko Satomura vs. Takumi Iroha
  • Wonder of Stardom Championship: Act Yasukawa vs. Dark Angel
  • High Speed Championship: Natsuki*Taiyo vs. Yuhi
  • Goddesses of Stardom Championship: Kyoko Kimura and Hailey Hatred vs. Kairi Hojo and Natsumi Showzuki
  • Kaori Yoneyama, Hiroyo Matsumoto, and Syuri vs. Nanae Takahashi, Tsukasa Fujimoto, and Mika Nagano
  • World of Stardom Championship: Alpha Female vs. Io Shirai
  • Yuzuki Aikawa Retirement Match: Yuzuki Aikawa vs. Yoshiko

Big show! Let’s get to it.

stardom4-29-1
Risa Sera and Rutsuko Yamaguchi vs. Yui Yokoo and Sumire Yoshino
Ryogoku Starting Over Stardom vs. Ice Ribbon

The fun thing about watching non-current Joshi is seeing how quickly some young wrestlers just disappear into the sunset. I talk about how I don’t like getting too emotionally attached to rookies and this is why – since Joshi wrestlers start so young it isn’t unusual for them to move on to go to college, start a family, etc. and leaving hardly a trace behind them. You’ll be forgiven if you don’t know who three of these wrestlers are since they had short careers that never blossomed, but Risa Sera is still wrestling and is currently one of the stars of Ice Ribbon. Rutsuko hasn’t wrestled since 2014, Yui since 2013, and Sumire hasn’t wrestled since 2013 as well (she was a lesser known idol that only wrestled for three months).

stardom4-29-1Risa and Sumire begin the match, they trade elbows against the ropes until Sera hits a dropkick. She tags in Rutsuko as Yui is also tagged in, Rutsuko boots Yui and she applies The Claw against the ropes until Sumire breaks it up. Yui and Rutsuko trade elbows, Rutsuko slams Yui into her knee but Yui returns the favor. Dropkick by Yui and she tags Sumire, Sumire goes for a cartwheel mule kick but Rutsuko moves out of the way and puts her in a crab hold. Sumire gets to the ropes to force a break, Rutsuko tags in Risa and Risa hits a series of dropkicks on Sumire. Schwein by Risa, she picks up Sumire but Sumire slides behind her and applies a sleeper. Sumire reverts the hold into a cross armbreaker but Sera gets a foot on the ropes. Cartwheel mule kick by Sumire and she tags in Yui, Yui goes for a chokeslam but Sera blocks it. RainSleeper by Yui but Rutsuko breaks it up, Risa picks up Yui and hits Ayers Rock but Sumire breaks up the cover. Risa goes to the second turnbuckle and hits a diving body press, but Yui kicks out of the cover. Rutsuko comes in but she kicks Risa by accident, running elbow by Yui to Risa and she picks up the three count! Yui Yokoo and Sumire Yoshino are the winners.

I wouldn’t call this a good match, although it was generally inoffensive. Sumire was pretty rough around the edges, I am not terribly surprised she quit wrestling, and while Risa Sera is currently a really good wrestler she was still working out the kinks in 2013. Rutsuko stood out the most because she had the most personality, however Yui seemed like the most complete wrestler. A skippable opener, even if it is interesting to watch a match with young wrestlers from four years ago where three have already left the business.

Manami Toyota vs. Miho Wakizawa
All Japan Women’s Gold Tradition Ryogoku Advent

For an All Japan Women’s flashback, this was an interesting choice. Wakizawa started in AJW but joined Stardom in 2011, she was mostly a midcarder but did hold the AJW Championship in AJW and the Tag Team Championship in Stardom. She is against one of the greatest Joshi wrestlers ever from the heyday of AJW, by 2013 she was in her 40s and past her prime but Toyota still had passion for the business and was wrestling regularly. This is not their first singles match against each other, but Toyota was undefeated in their battles coming into the match.

Wakizawa charges Toyota but Toyota hits a heel drop for a two count cover. Back up they trade slaps, a battle that Toyota wins, but Wakizawa fires back with elbows. Toyota bounces Wakizawa off the ropes and kicks her in the chest, Toyota charges Wakizawa but Wakizawa rolls her around the ring before covering Toyota for a two. Irish whip by Wakizawa but Toyota reverses it and gives Wakizawa a rolling cradle of her own. Toyota puts Wakizawa in the ropes but Wakizawa avoids the dropkick and kicks Toyota out of the ring. Wakizawa then goes up top and dives out onto Toyota with a plancha, she slides Toyota back into the ring and goes up top, connecting with a missile dropkick. Toyota gets back up but Wakizawa hits a Claw STO for a two count. Waistlock by Wakizawa but Toyota gets into the ropes, big boot by Toyota and she goes for the Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex but Wakizawa rolls out of it and hits a German suplex hold. Wakizawa picks up Toyota but Toyota elbows her off, release German by Toyota and she goes for a moonsault, but Wakizawa gets her feet up. Fisherman suplex hold by Wakizawa, but Toyota kicks out.

stardom4-29-2Wakizawa goes up top and hits another missile dropkick, she returns to the top turnbuckle but Toyota boots her down to the floor. Toyota climbs the turnbuckle and dives out onto Wakizawa with her own plancha, taking out a random innocent on the floor in the process. Toyota rolls Wakizawa back in and hits a missile dropkick, another missile dropkick by Toyota and she covers Wakizawa for two. Toyota returns to the top but Wakizawa joins her, Toyota pushes her off and dropkicks Wakizawa in the back of the head. Moonsault by Toyota, but Wakizawa barely gets a shoulder up. Toyota picks up Wakizawa and hits a German suplex hold, she goes up top but Toyota joins her and hits a Frankensteiner, which Toyota rolls through for a two count. Straight Jacket German by Toyota, she goes up top but Wakizawa joins her and hits an avalanche fisherman buster for two. Another fisherman buster by Wakizawa, but again Toyota kicks out. Wakizawa picks up Toyota but Toyota kicks her and hits the Japanese Ocean Queen Bomb, she goes for the cover but lifts up Wakizawa before the three. Toyota then drags Wakizawa up and hits a release Japanese Ocean Cyclone Queen Bee Bomb. She goes for one final one, but Wakizawa slides down her back and applies the Backslide From Venom for the three count! Miho Wakizawa wins!

Afterwards, Wakizawa is in tears as she is overcome with emotion, and Toyota gives her a hug. Streamers are even thrown for Wakizawa, so to say this win meant a lot to her is an understatement.

It feels odd that a match that clearly meant so much to Wakizawa is just an undercard match. An undercard match on a stacked show, but still. Anyone that has never seen Toyota will be an awe at how any times she goes to the top turnbuckle, she always lived up there in her heyday and still does even though at the time of the match she was over 40 years old. I couldn’t say this was a great match but they definitely gave it their all, as both were dropping bombs and trying everything to get the win. Wakizawa kicked out of Toyota’s best offense, but at this stage of her career that just wasn’t really a big deal to Toyota as clearly the point here was for Wakizawa to overcome and get a win that meant a lot to her on a personal level. An interesting match that is worth watching, even if in a vacuum it seems out of place.  Mildly Recommended

Ibushi, Gota Ihashi, Lin Byron, and Iwatani vs. Nakazawa, Hikaru Sato, Makoto, and Eri Susa
Ryogoku Special MIX Eight Person Tag Match

Stardom bringing the crazy for Sumo Hall. Ibushi, Ihashi, Sato, and Nakazawa all came over from DDT, bringing their zany brand of offense with them. Makoto and Byron at the time represented WNC, which was Tajiri’s wrestling promotion. That leaves just Mayu and Eri, the only two Stardom wrestlers in the match. I am not sure why this match exists but it does so I will watch it.

Mayu and Eri are the first two in, wristlock by Eri but Mayu armdrags out of it. Eri tags in Nakazawa, Sato comes in too but Mayu grabs their wrists and hits a springboard split-legged double armdrag. Mayu dropkicks both of them but Nakazawa soon takes back over and he tags in Sato. Sato puts on his swim gear and starts working over Mayu in the corner. He tags in Makoto, Makoto snaps Mayu off the ropes before tagging in Eri. DDT by Eri and she hits a second one, Mayu fights back and they trade elbows. Elevated DDT by Eri, and she covers Mayu for two. She tags Nakazawa, Nakazawa straddles Mayu on the top rope and slides her uh crotch-first across the ropes. That’s as nice as I can put it. Sato comes in and puts Mayu in a crab hold, but Mayu gets into the ropes. Sato goes off the ropes but Mayu dropkicks him and she hits a vertical suplex for a two count. Mayu tags in Byron, Byron DDTs Sato but Nakazawa runs in and attacks her. Eri comes in too as does Makoto, but Byron fights them all off. Sato recovers but Bryon drops him on the second rope, she goes for the Tiger Feint Kick but Nakazawa jumps in the way. Bryon punches him in the balls and hits the Tiger Feint Kick anyway, she goes up top but Nakazawa grabs her before she can jump off. Backdrop suplex by Sato, he tags in Nakazawa while Ibushi is also tagged in.

stardom4-29-3Pele Kick by Ibushi and he connects with a kick combination, standing moonsault by Ibushi but Makoto breaks it up. DDT by Makoto to Ibushi, she then hits a footstomp followed by a cartwheel kneedrop. Nakazawa covers Ibushi but Ihashi breaks it up, kick to the chest by Ihashi to Nakazawa and he hits a cartwheel moonsault. Ibushi then follows with a running shooting star press and a moonsault off the second turnbuckle, but Nakazawa kicks out of the cover. He tags in Mayu, double wrist armsault by Mayu but it gets two. Mayu picks up Nakazawa and they trade elbows, Mayu slaps Nakazawa but he takes off his clothes and hits a spear. He takes off his underwear and goes for the Ultimate Venom Arm, Makoto tries to stop him so she gets it instead. He goes back to Mayu but Mayu blocks it, Sato tries to help Nakazawa get the hold applied but both teams run in and have a Test of Strength with the underwear. Makoto come sin but she goes against Nakazawa as does Eri, helping Mayu successfully block the hold. Makoto and Eri continue helping Mayu’s team, as all the women hit running strikes on Nakazawa in the corner. Mayu picks up Nakazawa, Eri chops Nakazawa in the chest and Mayu nails the dragon suplex hold for the three count! Kota Ibushi, Gota Ihashi, Lin Byron, and Mayu Iwatani are the winners.

This was a bit too DDT-y for me as their brand of comedy isn’t my favorite, but I did like Eri and Makoto switching teams as they agreed with me. Mayu was still a bit shaky but still learning, and everyone else looked fine. A bit longer than it needed to be but if you enjoy Nakazawa you may enjoy this match too.

Meiko Satomura vs. Takumi Iroha
Takumi Iroha Debut Match

And this is how 21 year old Takumi Iroha began her career. I imagine as a rookie, there is no higher honor than having your debut match not only at Sumo Hall but against one of the best Joshi wrestlers of the last decade, but the flipside of that is Meiko Satomura wasn’t known for being gentle. So Iroha was going to get a memorable experience, but she may not live to enjoy it for very long. Stardom clearly thought a lot of Iroha, so we’ll see if she deserved such a big spot for the first match.

stardom4-29-4The match starts slow but Iroha fires up Satomura by elbowing her against the ropes instead of giving a clean break. Iroha kicks Satomura when they lock knuckles but Satomura elbows her hard in the face and kicks Iroha into the corner. Jumping elbow by Satomura and she applies a front necklock, armbar by Satomura but Iroha gets into the ropes. Back up they trade elbows, uppercut by Satomura and she knocks Iroha into the corner. Iroha swats Satomura away and kicks her in the chest, uppercut by Iroha and she dropkicks her into the opposite corner. Iroha picks up Satomura and flips her into a cross armbreaker, she reverts it into a triangle choke before then changing it to an ankle hold when she can’t keep Satomura down. Satomura gets out of it with a jawbreaker, she attempts an Irish whip but Iroha blocks it and re-applies the triangle choke. Satomura gets into the ropes, Iroha slams Satomura to the mat and goes up top, and she hits a diving crossbody for a two count. Iroha picks up Satomura but Satomura elbows her off, she goes off the ropes but Iroha hits a powerslam for another two count. Backdrop suplex by Iroha, she picks up Satomura and goes off the ropes, but Satomura kicks her in the stomach and knocks her down with an uppercut. Kick to the head by Satomura, and Iroha rolls out of the ring hurt. Iroha is pretty out of it so Satomura goes to get her, she slides Iroha back in and covers her for two. Satomura picks up Iroha but Iroha dropkicks her, Satomura quickly kicks Iroha in the ribs and nails the cartwheel kneedrop. Seated armbar by Satomura, but Iroha quickly gets a hand on the ropes. DDT by Satomura, she goes up top and she hits the diving body press for a two count cover. Satomura goes for a Death Valley Bomb, Iroha gets out of it but Satomura kicks her in the ribs. Backdrop suplex by Satomura, she covers Iroha but lifts her head before the three count. Satomura puts Iroha in a sleeper hold, Iroha can’t get to the ropes and goes to sleep. Meiko Satomura wins!

I enjoyed this one quite a bit, perhaps with some benefit of hindsight. Iroha no longer wrestles in Stardom as she left the promotion to join Chigusa Nagayo’s Marvelous, however she has really developed into a solid wrestler. I wouldn’t say she was a complete natural as aside from a few cool submission moves she didn’t do anything to really stand out in this match, but she sold really well and nothing ever felt awkward. Satomura gave the rookie a fair amount of offense but this was before Satomura went full ass-kicker on Stardom, I doubt a wrestler today in their debut match would have as much luck. An above average match with an obvious result, but it was nice to see someone debut on such a big stage.

Act Yasukawa vs. Dark Angel
Wonder of Stardom Championship

The championship was vacant going into the match, as Yuzuki Aikawa gave up the title prior to her retirement. Dark Angel is also known as Sarah Stock, currently she is helping in NXT but back in 2013 she split her time between Stardom and CMLL. There was no tournament to determine who would go after the vacate title, however Dark Angel did recently have a victory over Hiroyo Matsumoto so it wasn’t completely random. Act Yasukawa was still early in her career, she actually had been the last challenger for the Wonder of Stardom Championship, losing to Yuzuki Aikawa on March 31st.

They trade holds to start, Dark Angel gets Act to the mat but Act gets out of it and they return to their feet. Dark Angel gets Act to the mat again, she pushes Act into the corner and she delivers a dropkick. Snapmare by Dark Angel and she rolls up Act for a two count, Dark Angel goes for a lariat but Act ducks it and puts Dark Angel in the Stretch Muffler. Dark Angel gets to the ropes, Act hangs her upside down from the top rope before kicking her in the leg. Act continues on Dark Angel’s leg, Dark Angel jumps up on the top turnbuckle but Act pushes her down to the floor. Act then goes out to the apron and she hits a cannonball down onto Dark Angel, Act slides Dark Angel back in and hits the ACT Special for a two count. Act goes off the ropes and knees Dark Angel in the head, but again her cover gets two. Act goes for a neck swing but Dark Angel gets out of it and the pair trade elbows. Springboard dropkick by Dark Angel, Act rolls out of the ring but Dark Angel goes up top and dives out onto Act with a plancha suicida, completely flattening her.

stardom4-29-5Act looks incredibly hurt but after a minute she manages to get back into the ring, slingshot bodypress by Dark Angel and she gets a two count. Dark Angel goes for the La Reienera but Act gets out of it, dropkick by Act but Dark Angel gets out of the tombstone and puts Act in the double chickenwing armlock with a neckscissors, but Act is too close to the ropes and gets the break. Dark Angel picks up Act and hits the Stun Gun, suplex by Dark Angel but Act kicks out. Dark Angel picks up Act but Act blocks the pedigree, reverse STO by Act and she delivers the Senton Bomb off the second turnbuckle. Act goes up again but Dark Angel recovers and tosses her off, Dark Angel goes up but Act joins her and powerslams Act to the mat for a two count. Act goes up top but Dark Angel hits the rope to knock her off, Act rolls Dark Angel to the mat but Dark Angel kicks out of the cover. Grounded necklock by Act but Dark Angel suplexes out of it, La Reienera by Dark Angel and after Act can’t escape the referee calls for the bell! Dark Angel is the new champion.

I like both of these wrestlers but I felt the match fell a bit flat. Something seemed off, they weren’t always on the same page and some of the moves just weren’t hit very cleanly. Act is always a bundle of fun to watch as she has a wide variety of offense and the pacing/time felt right as Dark Angel knows how to lay out a match, it just never sucked me in as the story was never really there (the crowd also never really got into it either). Some quality spots, but overall it didn’t reach the level I was hoping for.

stardom4-29-6
(c) Natsuki*Taiyo vs. Yuhi
NEO High Speed Championship

After NEO disbanded, the High Speed Championship continued to be defended and eventually landed in Stardom when the promotion was created in 2011. Taiyo, a former NEO wrestler, won the championship for the third time in July of 2011, and had held it continuously since then. The belt was kinda perfect for her as she wrestled at a very fast speed. Yuhi debuted in Stardom in 2012 and showed a lot of promise, however she retired in 2014 so she had a pretty short career. Even though she held the title for a long time, this was only Taiyo’s third defense, as like today the High Speed Championship was not defended very often.

After some fast paced rope running, things calm down with wristlocks until Yuhi pushes Taiyo into the ropes and goes for a Tiger Feint Kick. Taiyo ducks that, Yuhi grabs her arm and she hits a diving armdrag out of the corner. Taiyo goes off the ropes and hits an elbow onto Yuhi, kicks to the ribs by Taiyo and she applies an armbar. She releases the hold after a moment, kicks by Taiyo but Yuhi fights back with elbows. Taiyo dropkicks Yuhi hard in the chest, she goes up top and delivers a missile dropkick. Running dropkick by Taiyo in the corner, and she covers Yuhi for two. Taiyo goes for the Iguchi Bomb but Yuhi hurricanranas out of it, quebrada by Yuhi but Taiyo kicks out of the cover. Yuhi goes up top but Taiyo quickly joins her and armdrags her to the mat, Iguchi Bomb by Yuhi but it gets a two. Kick by Taiyo but Yuhi blocks the Taiyo-chan☆Bomb, kicks by Yuhi but Taiyo catches one and pushes her to the mat.

stardom4-29-6Kick to the chest by Taiyo, she goes off the ropes but Yuhi slides away and kicks Taiyo in the chest. Ankle Hold by Yuhi but Taiyo gets to the ropes to force a break. Kicks by Yuhi and she hits a strike combination, handstand capoeira by Yuhi and she kicks Taiyo in the head for a two count. Yuhi goes up top but Taiyo avoids the Firebird Splash, Taiyo-chan☆Bomb by Taiyo but Yuhi gets a shoulder up. Hard elbow by Taiyo but Yuhi returns fire, knees by Taiyo but Yuhi gets into the ropes. Release German by Taiyo but Yuhi springs up and hits a German suplex hold for two. Taiyo goes for La Magistral but Yuhi blocks it, jumping kick by Yuhi and she delivers the Honey Flash, but Taiyo barely gets a shoulder up. Yuhi goes for a kick but Taiyo catches it and hits a leg trap suplex hold, but it gets two. Taiyo picks up Yuhi and puts her onto the top turnbuckle, Taiyo joins her and nails the Taiyo-chan*Spanish Fly, picking up the three count! Natsuki Taiyo is still the High Speed Champion!

This was a really fun match that delivered what it was aiming for – a fast paced entertaining midcard match that kept the fans engaged without overshadowing the bigger matches on the card. Yuhi was such a great young talent, she retired before she was even 18 so we’ll never know how great she could have been. This type of match was Taiyo’s specialty as she had a lot of different high speed offense, and even though the match was over ten minutes it flew by. I could watch this all day, far from a classic but just what the card needed to get the crowd back into it.  Recommended

(c) Kyoko Kimura and Hailey Hatred vs. Kairi Hojo and Natsumi Showzuki
Goddesses of Stardom Championship

And we roll on with our third championship match of the night. Kyoko and Hailey won the titles on March 17th against Taiyo and Yoshiko, and this is their first defense of the title. They likely did that change to free up Yoshiko and Taiyo for this event, since that is how wrestling works. We all know Kairi Hojo, as she is the current emotional leader of Stardom, but Natsumi was at her level in 2013 and they were a tag team together for over a year. Natsumi had her last match not long after this one, she suffered a back injury and officially retired in 2015. This is not the first time that Kairi and Natsumi battled Kimura Monster-gun, as they looked to bring the belts back to Stardom.

Kairi and Natsumi try to attack before the bell, but it quickly backfires as Kimura Monster-gun takes over. Kairi stays in the ring with Hailey but Kyoko pulls Kairi out of the ring and they battle on the floor. Hailey throws Kairi into the ring post while Kyoko slides Natsumi into the ring, Kyoko puts Natsumi in the Tree of Woe and jumps down on her in the corner. Hailey comes in too as they double team Natsumi, Hailey stays in and works over Natsumi’s leg. Kyoko is tagged in and she puts Natsumi in a leglock, but Natsumi rolls up Kyoko for a quick two count. Kyoko goes back to the leg but Natsumi hits a crossbody and tags in Kairi. Kyoko and Hailey double team Kairi as they slam her into the mat, but Kairi gets away and hits a double spear. Another spear by Kairi onto Kyoko and she hits another one followed by a third. Kairi picks up Kyoko but Kyoko slides away and pushes Kairi to the mat. Kairi recovers and elbows Kyoko but Kyoko boots her in the face for a two count cover. Front necklock by Kairi but Kyoko reverses it, Kairi gets into the ropes but Kyoko slaps her in the face. Kyoko picks up Kairi and puts her in a sleeper, but Natsumi runs in and breaks it up.

stardom4-29-7Slaps by Natsumi to Kyoko, she goes back out to the apron and Kairi tags her in. Knees by Natsumi to Kyoko, running knee by Natsumi and she covers Kyoko for a two count. Natsumi goes off the ropes but Hailey hits her from the apron, Kyoko tags in Hailey and they kick Natsumi around the ring, Kairi comes in too but ultimately Kimura Monster-gun keeps the advantage. Natsumi kicks Kyoko in the head while Kairi spears Hailey, kick by Natsumi to Hailey and she tags in Kairi. Assisted kneedrop by Natsumi, she goes up top and hits a diving double kneedrop onto Hailey. Kairi then goes up top and nails the diving elbow drop, but Kyoko breaks up the pin. Hailey clears the ring, she picks up Kairi and snaps off a German suplex hold for two. Hailey picks up Kairi again and throws her into the corner, Kyoko returns and they double team Kairi. High kick by Hailey, and she covers Kairi for two. Hailey gets on the second turnbuckle and they hit an assisted Gory Special, but Natsumi breaks up the pin. Hailey picks up Kairi but Kairi spins away and applies the 4173 (Gedo Clutch) for the three count! Natsumi Showzuki and Kairi Hojo are your new champions!

I haven’t seen a ton of Hailey Hatred, and maybe I am just watching the wrong matches, but I have yet to see her in a match look good. Every spear by Kairi to Hailey just looked rough, as if Hailey had never sold a spear before, and so much of it felt awkward. Her German Suplex was nice but nothing else was smooth. To be fair, some of the Kyoko segments looked rough too, it just felt disjointed as hell. Natsumi and Kairi were spunky as you’d assume and there were some solid parts, but overall just too rough around the edges to recommend.

stardom4-29-8
Kaori Yoneyama, Hiroyo Matsumoto, and Syuri vs. Takahashi, Fujimoto, and Mika Nagano

Nanae Takahashi That’s Women’s Pro-Wrestling

I guess this is our breather before the big matches. Fujimoto is on loan from Ice Ribbon, while Syuri is from WNC. Matsumoto, Yoneyama, and Nagano were all Freelancers, leaving Nanae Takahashi as the only Stardom wrestler in the bunch. This actually is the last wrestling match in Mika Nagano’s career, as she was primarily focused on her MMA career.

Kaori and Fujimoto start off but they reach a stalemate and tag in Mika and Syuri. Mika takes down Syuri, kicks by Syuri but Mika slides away and hits mounted elbows. Mika goes for a cross armbreaker and gets it locked on, but Syuri gets a foot on the ropes. Nanae and Hiroyo are tagged in and they trade elbows, shoulderblock by Nanae and she throws down Hiroyo by the hair. Hiroyo returns the favor and hits a body avalanche before making the tag to Kaori. Abdominal Stretch by Kaori, she puts Nanae in the ropes so that her teammates can help her with the Stardom star. Syuri is tagged in next, Nanae slaps her but Syuri slaps her back and knees Nanae in the stomach. She goes off the ropes but Nanae delivers a lariat before making the hot tag to Fujimoto. Fujimoto kicks down all three of her opponents, Mika comes in and she dropkicks Syuri in the corner. Double catapult dropkick by Fujimoto to Syuri, she goes for a suplex but Syuri blocks it and hits a scoop slam. Syuri goes off the ropes but Fujimoto dropkicks her and tags in Mika, Mika and Syuri trade elbows, Syuri knees Mika into the corner and she hits a jumping knee. Suplex by Syuri, and she covers Mika for two. Mika goes for a cross armbreaker but it gets broken up, her teammates run in too however and Mika gets the hold re-applied. Mike gets out of it, knee by Mika but Syuri knees her back.

stardom4-29-8Syuri tags in Hiroyo and Hiroyo suplexes Mika with Kaori’s help. Hiroyo gets Mike on her back but Mika slides away and rolls up Hiroyo for two. Sleeper by Mika to Hiroyo, Nanae is tagged in and she lariats Hiroyo in the corner. Another lariat by Nanae, she goes for a suplex but Hiroyo blocks it. Hiroyo and Nanae trade elbows, Hiroyo slides to the apron and snaps Nanae’s neck over the top rope. Hiroyo goes up top and hits a missile dropkick, she charges Nanae but Nanae kicks her back and they trade strikes. Roaring Elbow by Hiroyo, but Nanae gets a shoulder up. Reverse Double Kneedrop by Hiroyo, but Fujimoto breaks up the cover. Hiroyo tags in Kaori, diving senton by Kaori to Nanae and she gets a two count. Everyone stacks on Hiroyo so she can hit a heavy kneedrop, cover by Kaori but Nanae kicks out at two. Nanae is thrown into the corner but Nanae lariats all of her opponents, she goes up top and hits the Refrigerator Bomb for a two count. Nanae picks up Kaori but Kaori sneaks in a flash pin for two. German suplex by Nanae but Kaori knees her in the back of the head, she goes up top and delivers the Takako Panic for a two count. Kaori picks up Nanae, elbow by Nanae and she hits a lariat. Yoshi Tonic by Kaori, she picks up Nanae but Fujimoto hits the Venus Shoot on her. Nanae picks up Kaori and delivers the Falcon Arrow, but Hiroyo breaks up the pin. The ring clears, Nanae picks up Kaori and she nails the One Second EX for the three count! Team Nanae Takahashi wins!

While a match like this isn’t going to blow anyone away, it was a smartly worked match that kept at a decent pace while giving all the wrestlers a chance to shine. Its a shame that Mika stopped wrestling as I love me a good MMA gimmick (well not a gimmick in her case), and her pairing with Syuri was entertaining. Nanae Takahashi was the star of the match by design but looked good, and everyone played their role well with no mistakes or miscommunications. Nothing special in the long run but a solid match bell to bell and quality filler.  Mildly Recommended

(c) Alpha Female vs. Io Shirai
This match is for the World of Stardom Championship

Just like in 2016, back in 2013 Io was already battling the monster gaijins. Alpha Female had just won the championship from Nanae Takahashi on March 17th, after Nanae held the title for 602 days. That isn’t a typo. Her first title defense is against the rising young star of Stardom, at the biggest event in Stardom’s history. Even Stevie Wonder could see who was winning this match, but sometimes promotions have to do the right thing even if its predictable. Leading up to this match, Io proved she was a worthy challenger for the title by winning a tournament for the chance at the belt, beating Kaori Yoneyama and Dark Angel along the way. That would help her legitimacy, as instead of being ‘handed’ a title shot she earned it. Now she just had to prove herself one last time against one of the biggest wrestlers to set foot in the Stardom ring.

After Alpha Female jaws with the crowd they tie-up, Io tries to shoulderblock Alpha Female over but it obviously fails. Chops by Io, she goes for a slam but Alpha Female blocks it and hits a scoop slam of her own. Alpha Female throws Io into the corner but Io avoids her charge and hits a spinning headscissors followed by a standing moonsault for two. Io attempts to Irish whip Alpha Female but Alpha Female blocks it and hits a release German suplex. Alpha Female picks up Io and hits a German suplex hold, but Io kicks out at two. Clubs to the chest by Alpha Female and she hits a lariat, cobra clutch by Alpha Female but Io gets into the ropes for a break. Alpha Female picks up Io but Io lands on her feet on the suplex attempt and dropkicks Alpha Female into the corner. Space Rolling Elbow by Io but Alpha Female blocks the face crusher and delivers a release German. Alpha Female charges Io but Io ducks her lariat and applies the Tarantula in the ropes. Io releases it and goes for a swandive move, but Alpha Female grabs her before she can springboard and elbows her down to the floor. Alpha Female goes out after her and slams her into the apron, she puts Io against the ring post and goes for a lariat, but Io moves out of the way. Io then hits a Tiger Feint Kick around the ring post, she goes up top and delivers a moonsault down onto Alpha Female.

stardom4-29-9Alpha Female is rolled into the ring by Kyoko Kimura, Io gets on the apron and she hits a swandive dropkick to Alpha Female’s back. Tiger Feint Kick by Io and she hits another swandive dropkick, pinning Alpha Female for a two count. Armtrap Crossface by Io but Alpha Female muscles out of it, body avalanche by Io in the corner but Alpha Female elbows her in the other corner and they trade elbows. Palm strike by Io but Alpha Female elbows her hard in the face for a two count. Alpha Female charges Io but Io slides out to the apron, diving hurricanrana by Io and she hits a double knee strike in the corner. Alpha Female fires back with a lariat, she picks up Io and delivers a chokebomb, but Io barely gets a shoulder up. Cobra Clutch by Alpha Female but Io gets a foot on the ropes to force a break, Alpha Female picks up Io and goes off the ropes, but Io catches her with a Frankensteiner. Spinning kicks to the head by Io and she hits a standing moonsault followed by a moonsault off the second turnbuckle and top turnbuckle, but Alpha Female kicks out of the cover. Io goes for another hurricanrana but Alpha Female catches her and hits a Buckle Bomb. Alpha Female picks up Io and goes for a slam but Io blocks it and hits a Buzzsaw Kick. Io rains more Buzzsaw Kicks onto Alpha Female, rolling savate kick by Io and she hits a second one for a two count cover. They get up, kicks to the midsection by Io and she nails another rolling savate kick for the three count! Io Shirai is the new champion!

This match was good but weird. The ending felt… strange as while repeated kicks to the head is a solid way to win a match, it wasn’t one of Io’s regular ways and it would have been more impressive if she had won with a power move (like a bridging suplex). Odd ending aside, Alpha Female is one of the top female heels in all of wrestling and plays the part perfectly, she is strong enough to do just about anything but doesn’t mind taking the big bumps when needed to put over the ‘good guy.’ Watching the match four years after it happened, it didn’t really have an epic feel like you’d hope from the young local star defeating the evil gaijin for the promotion’s top championship, but it did show that Io is incredibly hard to beat, which is a theme that continues to this day. I liked it overall, but the ending was a bit flat and it didn’t feel as special as it was probably intended to be.  Mildly Recommended

Yuzuki Aikawa vs. Yoshiko
Yuzuki Aikawa Retirement Match

After an exhilarating two and a half year career, Yuzuki Aikawa decided to call it quits. Aikawa embodied everything that Stardom wanted from their wrestlers so I am sure they were extremely sad to see her go. She was a popular idol and a popular wrestler, that perfect combination that Rossy Ogawa has wanted since the days of Jd’. But when he finally found the perfect one, after just two years she decided to no longer wrestle due to the impact it was having on her body. But Stardom was going to take full advantage by having her final match at Sumo Hall and stack the card with title matches to try to keep the fans that started watching the promotion just to see Aikawa. She is against a Stardom original, the foil to the Idol Movement, as Yoshiko was all about kicking ass and not about posing in modeling magazines. Yoshiko was only 19 years old when this match took place but already had a tag title reign under her belt, as she was seen as one of the top rising stars in the promotion. She was still unproven in a lot of ways, only two years into her career, and this was a huge spot for her to show that she belonged at the top of Stardom.

Aikawa and Yoshiko get right into it and end up on the mat, Yoshiko gets in the mount and holds down Aikawa. Aikawa hits an armdrag and kicks Yoshiko in the corner, figure four necklock by Aikawa and she rams Yoshiko’s head into the mat. Yoshiko kicks Aikawa into the corner and throws her down by the hair, bootscrapes by Yoshiko and she nails the running kick. Yoshiko puts Aikawa in the ropes and kicks her repeatedly in the chest, Irish whip by Yoshiko but Aikawa kicks her in the chest. Aikawa and Yoshiko trade elbow strikes, kicks to the leg by Aikawa but she poses for too long and Yoshiko bodyblocks her to the mat. Shoulderblocks by Yoshiko, she charges Aikawa in the corner but Aikawa hits a heel drop. Running body avalanche by Aikawa and she puts Yoshiko in a STF, but Yoshiko gets to the ropes. Aikawa goes for kicks but Yoshiko blocks them all and chokes Aikawa against the ropes. Aikawa goes for a fisherman suplex but Yoshiko gets out of it and hits a Codebreaker. Yoshiko applies a stretch hold before delivering a pump handle slam, she picks up Aikawa but Aikawa kicks her in the back. Fisherman suplex hold by Aikawa, but Yoshiko kicks out of the cover.

stardom4-29-10Hammerlock by Aikawa but Yoshiko slams her way out of it and hits a running senton. Another senton by Yoshiko and she hits one more for a two count. Yoshiko gets on the second turnbuckle and hits a diving senton, cover by Yoshiko but Aikawa gets a shoulder up. Yoshiko goes up top again but Aikawa snaps her neck over the top rope. Yoshiko falls out of the ring, Aikawa goes up top and dives out onto her with a plancha suicida. Aikawa returns to the ring and waits for Yoshiko, Yoshiko eventually slides back in and Aikawa hits her with the Shining Yuzard. Yuzupon Kick Blue by Aikawa, but Yoshiko barely kicks out of the cover. Aikawa goes for the Tiger Suplex but Yoshiko gets out of it, Yuzupon Stunner by Aikawa but Yoshiko drops her with a fireman’s carry slam for two. Yoshiko goes for the Reverse Splash but Aikawa moves out of the way, jumping knee by Aikawa in the corner and she kicks Yoshiko in the head again. Another head kick by Aikawa, but again Yoshiko kicks out. Aikawa picks up Yoshiko and kicks her in the head, but Yoshiko comes back with a headbutt. They both slowly get up and trade slaps, kicks by Aikawa to Yoshiko’s back and she hits the Yuzupon Kick Red, but Yoshiko gets up and fires off lariats. Aikawa ducks one and hits the Tiger Suplex Hold, but Yoshiko kicks out. Another Yuzupon Kick Red, but Yoshiko still won’t stay down for three. Aikawa goes for another Tiger Suplex Hold but Yoshiko pushes her off and hits a lariat. Chokebomb by Yoshiko, she gets on the top turnbuckle and nails a diving senton for the three count! Yoshiko wins!

When you think about it, this result is really different and Stardom went ‘all in’ on Yoshiko by structuring the match this way. I mean Yoshiko was only 19, and not fully established. Aikawa very rarely got pinned once she was the star of the promotion, she never even lost her singles title and ended up forfeiting it when her retirement was planned. But on the biggest event in Stardom’s history, Yoshiko not only defeats the most popular wrestler in Stardom but takes literally every move that she has in the process. I mean Aikawa had nothing left, if you check her move list on wikipedia she did everything with no success. Then the first time Yoshiko hits the diving senton from the top, she gets the win. The crowd really didn’t react as they didn’t know how to, while Yoshiko was a rising star she wasn’t really on this level at this point and probably wasn’t expected to win. The crowd didn’t boo, they were just stunned. Anyway, the issue with the match was that it was just really back and forth with no real transitions at times. Aikawa would hit a few moves, Yoshiko would stand up and hit a few moves, and so on. It didn’t feel like either really had a plan, it was just both hitting moves randomly with little to tie it together. Aikawa never really got desperate or emotional, as even though it was a Retirement Match she had such a short career that it didn’t have that epic feel like the Dynamite Kansai Retirement Match I watched a few weeks ago.  The match was good, but nothing more than that, even though I admire Stardom’s balls for putting all their chips in one basket and really going for it.  Mildly Recommended

Event: Passion Red “1PASSION”
Date: January 10th, 2009
Location: Itabashi Green Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 230

Lets take a walk down memory lane, back to when Kana and Nanae Takahashi actually liked each other. In 2008, while wrestling in NEO, a new faction was formed called Passion Red. For most of its run, Passion Red was just a three person stable, with Kana teaming up with Nanae Takahashi and Natsuki Taiyo. They were not a long term group, as Kana left in January of 2010, but they were quite popular during their run and it boosted both Kana and Natsuki Taiyo’s careers. Besides just being a team, they also promoted three shows together, with this being the first one (there were two more Passion Red events that took place after Kana left). All three wrestled on the show of course, but they also used many of the other more popular Freelancers available and a team from Sendai Girls’ as well. Here is the full card:

  • Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Kana
  • Arisa Nakajima vs. Emi Sakura
  • Toshie Uematsu and Io Shirai vs. Yumiko Hotta and Natsuki Taiyo
  • Fuka vs. Ray
  • Nanae Takahashi, Natsuki Taiyo, and Kana vs. Meiko Satomura, Ryo Mizunami, and DASH Chisako

The event is unclipped so we get to watch the show in all its original glory.

passion1-10-1
Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Kana

We start off with two wrestlers that I am sure everyone reading this is familar with. Kana needs no introduction, at the time of the show she was mainly a NEO wrestler that hadn’t won any titles yet in her career but was getting more popular by the day. Hiroyo Matsumoto was a Freelancer in 2009 the same as she is today, wrestling regularly in NEO and Ice Ribbon. This may be the best match of the night.

Matsumoto won’t shake Kana’s hand so Kana elbows her instead, Kana drops Matsumoto into the corner and hits a running hip attack to her back. Matsumoto fights back and stomps Kana but Kana connects with a series of kicks to Matsumoto’s ribs. Lariat by Matsumoto and she throws Kana into the corner, Matsumoto goes for a sleeper but Kana rolls out of it. Mounted slaps by Kana and she goes for an armbreaker, but Matsumoto rolls out of it and applies a side headlock. Matsomoto applies a reverse armbar but Kana gets to the ropes, scoop slam by Matsumoto and she hits an elbow drop. Camel Clutch by Matsumoto and she then applies a cross-legged submission before elbowing Kana in the back. Kana elbows Matsumoto into the corner and hits a hip attack, sleeper by Kana and she gets the cross armbreaker applied, but Matsumoto gets a toe on the ropes. Dropkick by Kana but Matsumoto returns fire with a lariat, Kana gets on the second turnbuckle but Matsumoto throws her off and puts her in a crab hold. Matsumoto picks up Kana and goes for a backbreaker, Kana slides away however and she dropkicks Matsumoto in the knee.

passionred1-10-1Cross kneelock by Kana but Matsumoto gets into the ropes, kicks to the leg by Kana and she puts Matsumoto in an Indian Deathlock while slapping Matsumoto in the face. Ankle hold by Kana but Matsumoto gets into the ropes, Kana charges Matsumoto but Matsumoto catches her with a sidewalk slam. Matsumoto gets on the second turnbuckle and hits a missile dropkick, cover by Matsumoto but it gets two. Elbow by Matsumoto but Kana slaps her as they exchange blows, Kana wins the battle and she follows with a release German. Matsumoto replies with an elbow smash, both wrestlers slowly get up and trade elbow strikes. Matsumoto elbows Kana into the corner and hits a body avalanche, cover by Matsumoto but it gets two. Matsumoto gets Kana on her shoulders but Kana rolls off and applies an ankle hold. Matsumoto gets to the ropes again, kicks to the leg by Kana but Matsumoto catches one and pushes her off. Roaring elbow by Matsumoto, she picks up Kana and delivers a gutbuster for two. Kick to the gut by Kana and she kicks Matsumoto hard in the head, but Matsumoto gets a foot on the ropes when she covers her. Elbow by Matsumoto and she drops Kana on her head with a backdrop suplex, she covers Kana but the bell rings, as time as expired. The match is a Draw.

This was a great match between two of the best Joshi wrestlers of this era. Matsumoto and Kana are still tearing it up today, but 2009 was a good year for both as they had been wrestling for years so they knew what they were doing, but they still had that passion you most often see from wrestlers earlier in their careers. They were really laying in the strikes, and both wrestlers stayed focused on their method of winning as Kana constantly attacked Matsumoto’s leg while Matsumoto went for power moves. I can’t really think of anything bad about it at all, I wouldn’t have minded a conclusive ending but opening matches get a bit more leeway in that regard. A high end match between two high end wrestlers, and a great way to kick off a new promotion offshoot.  Highly Recommended

passion1-10-2
Arisa Nakajima vs. Emi Sakura

Two more names that everyone should be familar with as both still actively wrestle. Back in 2009, Emi Sakura was the leader and trainer of the promotion Ice Ribbon, which was her home base until she left the promotion in 2012. Arisa Nakajima was in her third year at the time of the match and still had the cute wrestling attire as she hadn’t stepped up her game yet. She had already won two Jr. Championships in JWP however and was seen as a future star of the promotion.

Sakura attacks Nakajima before introductions with a dropkick, quick sunset flip by Sakura but it gets a two count. Nakajima slaps Sakura but Sakura rolls her up again, she gets on the second turnbuckle but Nakajima joins her. Sakura slides under Nakajima and hits a powerbomb, she picks up Nakajima but Nakajima hits a DDT. Dropkick by Nakajima, she goes off the ropes but Sakura avoids her charge and hits a jumping kick from the second turnbuckle. Crossbody by Sakura into the corner and they go into a strike exchange, which Sakura gets the better of. Sakura swings Nakajima to the mat by her hair, drop toehold by Sakura and she rolls over Nakajima’s back before applying a STF. Nakajima inches to the ropes to force a break, hard elbow by Nakajima and she hits a double underhook suplex. Mounted elbows and slaps by Nakajima and she hits a Tornado DDT. Diving roll-up by Nakajima, but Sakura gets a shoulder up.

passionred1-10-2Nakajima goes for a suplex but Sakura blocks it and elbows Nakajima to the mat. Sakura sits Nakajima on the second turnbuckle and joins her, but Nakajima elbows her off and hits a missile dropkick. Nakajima waits for Sakura to get up but she doesn’t, Nakajima picks her up and slams Sakura before going up top, but Sakura gets her feet up so Nakajima jumps over her. Stomps by Nakajima in the corner, Sakura goes for a swinging neckbreaker but Nakajima blocks it and applies a sleeper. German suplex hold by Nakajima, but Sakura gets a shoulder up. Nakajima goes up top and hits a diving footstomp, but again Sakura kicks out of the pin. Nakajima picks up Sakura and goes off the ropes, but Sakura catches her with a backslide for two. Sakura quickly puts Nakajima in La Magistral, and she picks up the three count! Emi Sakura wins the match.

A difficult match to really get a cohesive opinion on. The action was all fine and I loved the amount of fire that Nakajima showed, she was the one acting like the grumpy veteran even if she was dressed like a school girl. But Sakura’s methodology didn’t seem to fit as she actually was the seasoned veteran but was mostly being slightly silly or going for flash pins. It felt like they had a role reversal. It was also short at under seven minutes, and it felt like it ended a bit suddenly as Sakura hadn’t done any real damage to Nakajima. The match is watchable due to Nakajima’s offense, but it felt too off to really recommend.

passion1-10-3
Toshie Uematsu and Io Shirai vs. Yumiko Hotta and Natsuki Taiyo

Now this is a unique group of individuals. Uematsu was a Freelancer fresh off getting a big win over Devil Masami in her Retirement Match, she was set to get a nice push in theory but wrestled in so many different promotions that most of her success was just in the tag team division in JWP. Io Shirai currently is the Ace of Stardom and one of the best wrestlers in the world, but back in early 2009 she was a mid-card level Freelancer that had yet to win a title in any promotion. Hotta was the veteran of the group as she debuted back in 1985, she wrestled in a number of promotions as a Freelancer such as JWP and LLPW-X. Finally, Natsuki Taiyo is the second Passion Red wrestler to make an appearance tonight, she was a regular NEO wrestler who was still early in her career.

passionred1-10-3After they goof around with Toshie as Io wants to have fun with Taiyo and Hotta, things settle with Io and Hotta as the first two legal wrestlers. Io tries to dropkick Hotta with no luck, elbows by Io but Hotta grabs her arms and makes her form the Passion Red sign. Toshie runs in and boots Hotta to the mat, Taiyo comes in and she is double teamed in the corner. Taiyo takes back over with dropkicks and tags in Hotta, Io tries to fight back but Hotta doesn’t budge. Crab hold by Hotta to Io but Toshie breaks it up, Hotta elbows Toshie into the corner as Io goes for a roll-up, but Hotta reverses it into a cross armbreaker. Hotta tags Taiyo, wristlock by Taiyo to Io but Io throws Taiyo into the corner and hits a dropkick. Io tags in Toshie, Toshie throws down Taiyo by her hair and hits a running boot in the corner. Toshie picks up Taiyo, Toshie goes for lariats but Taiyo ducks it and hits a springboard crossbody for a two count. She tags Hotta back in, Hotta kicks Toshie in the back but Toshie dropkicks her in the head. Io comes in the ring to help Toshie with Hotta, Taiyo comes in too but Io hits Hotta with a Space Rolling Elbow in the corner. She goes for another one but Hotta catches her, Io takes Hotta to the mat and applies a crossface, but Taiyo breaks it up. Code Breaker by Io to Hotta and she applies an armtrap crossface, but Hotta gets into the ropes. Io goes off the ropes but Hotta hits a hard elbow, Hotta tags in Taiyo and Taiyo hits a diving body press for two. Taiyo and Io trade elbows, they go back and forth with Taiyo winning the sequence with a dropkick. Toshie flies in the ring with a missile dropkick, quebrada by Io to Taiyo but it only gets two. Io goes up top but Hotta grabs her, Taiyo joins Io and hits an avalanche armdrag. Taiyo goes for an Iguchi Bomb but Io reverses it with a hurricanrana, Tiger Feint Kick by Io and she hits a side Russian leg sweep for a two count. Io slams Taiyo in front of the corner, she goes up top but Taiyo avoids the body press. Triple Taiyo☆Chan La Magistral by Taiyo, she picks up Io and nails the Iguchi Bomb, the Io barely gets a shoulder up. Taiyo goes for a kick but Io ducks it, Hotta runs in and hits Io, Taiyo-chan☆Bomb by Taiyo and she gets the three count! Hotta and Taiyo are your winners.

Io Shirai is just one of those special talents, she is in 2016 and she was back in 2009. She was still early in her career but even here she is so fluid and still has the ability to connect with the crowd in any situation. Hotta went back and forth between being grumpy vet and playing along, while Toshie was having none of it. Not a lot of structure but solid tag teaming by both sides and a really well done closing stretch. Maybe not memorable in the grand scheme of things but a fun match that highlighted all four wrestlers.  Mildly Recommended

passion1-10-4
Fuka vs. Ray

What a special little random match, well at least it feels special now since Fuka has been retired for so long. Fuka was one of the most successful wrestlers out of JdStar’s “Athtress” initiative, which was their attempt to find ‘Idols’ that would bridge the gap between modeling/acting and wrestling. It generally failed, but it gave us Fuka so we are thankful for that. Fuka wrestling in various smaller promotions including her own promoted shows after JDStar folded in 2007, maintaining her popularity. Ray was also a Freelancer that mostly wrestled in IBUKI and NEO, although at this stage of her career she still had no title wins. So Fuka is definitely the bigger star here, but Ray was a five year veteran so was far from a push-over.

passionred1-10-4Ray and Fuka circled each other as both were slow to engage, Fuka takes Ray to the mat and applies a kneelock. Ray quickly gets out of it but Fuka takes her back down and goes for a cross armbreaker, but Ray gets out of it and goes for a Kimura. Sleeper attempt by Ray but Fuka blocks it and they end up in the ropes again. Ray stomps on Fuka and kicks her in the back, but Fuka returns the favor and hits a spinning headscissors. Tiger Feint Kick by Fuka and she goes for the armbreaker again, Ray blocks it so Fuka applies a triangle choke instead. Ray escapes it and puts Fuka in a crab hold, Fuka gets to the ropes and blocks Ray’s next submission attempt before putting her in an ankle hold. Ray gets out of it and dropkicks Fuka, she picks Fuka back up and chops her down into the corner. Irish whip by Ray and she hits a Space Rolling Elbow followed by a Stunner for a two count. Fuka knees Ray in the chest, she picks her up but Ray blocks the Fisherman Buster. Heel Drop by Fuka and she hits a Fisherman Suplex for a two count cover. Fuka goes off the ropes but Ray avoids her dropkick attempt and hits a jumping kick to the head. Cartwheel powerbomb by Ray, but Fuka kicks out of the cover. Ray goes up top but Fuka kicks her from behind, Fuka joins Ray but Ray pushes her off and hits a missile dropkick. Ray picks up Fuka and hits  German Suplex Hold, picking up a two count. Ray goes up top but Fuka avoids the moonsault attempt, Gannosuke Clutch by Fuka but it gets two. Ray and Fuka trade elbows before trading kicks, high kick by Fuka but Ray kicks her in the face back and covers her for two. Ray goes off the ropes and kicks Fuka in the head again, she picks up Fuka but Fuka kicks her as she does so and hits a release German suplex. Inside Cradle by Fuka, she charges Ray and hits a jumping knee. Doll F by Fuka, and she gets the three count! Fuka wins the match.

Fuka was also a MMA fighter and kickboxer (not a great one), thus all the ground work and submission holds. It was even more ground based than I was expecting but it was a nice change of pace after the last few matches and presented something a bit different, which is always appreciated. They had lots of quick transitions and neither stayed in the dominate position for long before they switched, which hurt the flow a bit but also kept the action interesting. I wouldn’t consider it a high end match as it lacked some emotion, but still solid throughout.  Mildly Recommended

Nanae Takahashi, Taiyo, and Kana vs. Satomura, Ryo Mizunami, and DASH Chisako

Time for Passion Red vs. Meiko Satomura and her Sendai Girls’ babies. Takahashi makes her first appearance of the night, she by far was the most accomplished wrestler in Passion Red as she had a slew of title runs in her career and was one of the biggest stars in NEO. Meiko Satomura of course is the legendary owner who was a big star in GAEA before starting her own promotion in 2006. Mizunami debuted in 2004 but started slow (plus she missed all of  2006) and had won no titles in her career, today she is one of the top wrestlers in Pro Wrestling WAVE. Chisako is in a similar boat, she debuted in 2006 and was still working her way up the card as well. Mizunami and Chisako were two of Satomura’s top home grown wrestlers, so this was their chance to show off a bit against three of the most popular Freelancers in Joshi.

Taiyo and Chisako start the match for their teams, Taiyo elbows Chisako into the ropes but gives her a clean break. They trade wristlocks, Irish whip by Chisako but Taiyo trips her and runs over her back. Kana and Takahashi come in the ring and all three dropkick Chisako, Taiyo tags in Kana and Kana kicks Chisako repeatedly. Chisako fires back with a trio of dropkicks before tagging in Mizunami, Kana has recovered and the pair trade strikes. Dropkick to the knee by Mizunami and she hits a leg drop onto Kana’s head, picking up a two count. Kicks to the chest by Kana and she knees Mizunami into the corner so she can tag Takahashi. Deep chinlock by Takahashi but Mizunami gets out of it and applies a hammerlock. Takahashi gets out of that and knees Mizunami, Irish whip by Takahashi and the two collide with neither budging. Elbows by Mizunami but Takahashi shoulderblocks her to the mat, another shoulderblock in the corner by Takahashi but Mizunami floors her with a shoulderblock of her own. She tags in Satomura, Satomura locks knuckles with Takahashi and she wins the battle as she pushes Takahashi to the mat. Kicks by Satomura but Takahashi hits a sidewalk slam, picking up two. She tags in Taiyo, dropkicks by Taiyo but Satomura elbows her hard in the head. Kicks by Satomura, Chisako tags in and she dropkicks Taiyo in the corner before hitting a face crusher. More dropkicks by Chisako, and she covers Taiyo for a two count.

passionred1-10-5Taiyo slides under Chisako’s lariat attempt, they trade dropkick attempts before both go for flash pins. Chisako dropkicks Taiyo into the corner but Taiyo avoids her charge and drop toeholds her into the turnbuckles. Kana runs in and hits a hip attack, neckbreaker by Kana and Taiyo dropkicks Chisako in the face. Chisako recovers and trades elbows with Taiyo, Taiyo tries running up the corner but she trips, allowing Chisako to hit a neckbreaker. Chisako tags Mizunami, scoop slam by Mizunami and she hits a pair of leg drops. A crucifix pin by Taiyo only gets two, she goes off the ropes and rolls up Mizunami for another two count. Taiyo successfully runs up the corner this time and hits a crossbody, giving her time to tag in Kana. Kicks by Kana but Mizunami slams her back into the corner, Mizunami goes up top and she hits a diving shoulderblock for two. Mizunami picks up Kana but Kana slides away, hip attack by Kana and she hits a Reverse DDT for two. Kana waits for Mizunami to get up and hits a running hip attack, cover by Kana but it gets broken up. Kana picks up Mizunami and hits a Buzzsaw Kick, but she nudges her to her own corner so Satomura can tag in. Satomura does so, hip attack by Kana to Satomura and they trade leg kicks. Satomura wins the kick battle, jumping elbow by Satomura in the corner but Kana slaps her. Kick to the gut by Kana and she hits a German suplex hold, picking up two.

Seated Armbar by Kana, she tags in Takahashi but Satomura gets away from Takahashi and they trade elbows. Pele Kick by Satomura, she picks up Takahashi but Takahashi drops her on her head with a backdrop suplex. Lariat by Takahashi but Satomura elbows her to the mat, backdrop suplex by Satomura but Takahashi springs up from it and goes for a jumping kick. Satomura ducks it and hits a Death Valley Bomb, but it only gets two. Satomura goes for the Scorpio Rising but Takahashi blocks it and connects with a sliding kick for two. Uppercut by Satomura and she hits the cartwheel kneedrop, she tags in Chisako and Chisako comes in the ring with a missile dropkick. Cutter by Chisako, she picks up Takahashi but Takahashi hits a backdrop suplex. Takahashi goes for a Reverse Splash but Chisako moves, Mizunami and Satomura run in as Takahashi is triple teamed in the corner. Inside cradle by Chisako, but Takahashi kicks out. Enzuigiri by Takahashi, Taiyo and Kana come in so they can go for the Triple Powerbomb, but Satomura and Mizunami run in to prevent it. Hurricanrana by Chisako to Takahashi, kick to the head by Satomura and Mizunami hits a leg drop. Chisako goes up top and hits the diving body press, but Takahashi barely kicks out. Chisako goes up top again but Kana grabs her, Takahashi joins Chisako up top and she hits the superplex. Slaps by Takahashi and she hits a scoop pickup into a Stunner, but Mizunami breaks up the pin. Taiyo picks up Chisako in an Iguchi Bomb while Kana and Takahashi hit lariats off the second turnbuckle as she is hitting the move, Takahashi follows with the Nana☆Racka and she picks up the three count! Passion Red wins!

A fast paced and slightly chaotic match, but an entertaining main event. Takahashi did the bulk of the work for Passion Red, which makes sense as her partners both already had wrestled, and everyone seemed to be working hard to make the match a success. I liked the teamwork from both sides, someone was always ready to run in and help, which made the match feel more important as both teams were doing everything to win. Kana will always be the standout to me, her hip attacks are always are point, but Chisako and Mizunami both looked great as well. Six wrestler tags will never be a personal favorite of mine since they tend to be a bit too all over the place for my liking, but the action was all crisp even if there was no real structure to it to speak of. A fitting main event for Passion Red’s first show.  Recommended

Event: NEO “Women’s Pro-Wrestling Carnival 2009”
Date: December 31st, 2009
Location: Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 976

NEO Ladies was a Joshi promotion that had many re-starts but was running in some form from 1998 to 2010. Originally it was a break-off promotion from All Japan Women, and the name was supposed to be Nippon Women’s Wrestling but they had a trademark issue with New Japan Pro Wrestling.  So they went with NEO Ladies instead. Kyoko Inoue was the Ace of the promotion, but over the years other wrestlers made their name in NEO including Natsuki Taiyo, Nanae Takahashi, Hiroyo Matsumoto, Ayako Hamada, and many others.

This show took place towards the end of NEO’s run, but they still had a great roster. A bit of everything is here, including a title match, some comedy, some legends, a debut, and Kenny Omega in an Intergender Match. Here is the card:

  • Aya Yuki vs. Natsumi Kawano
  • Fuka and Asami Kawasaki vs. Hikaru Shida and Tsukasa Fujimoto
  • Dump Matsumoto vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Miyako Matsumoto
  • Kenny Omega vs. Natsuki*Taiyo
  • Mima Shimoda, Kyoko Kimura, Atsuko Emoto, and Tomoka Nakagawa vs. Makoto, Mio Shirai, Io Shirai, and Yukari Ishino
  • Emi Sakura vs. Kyoko Inoue
  • NEO Tag Team Championship: Nanae Takahashi and Kana vs. Yoshiko Tamura and Ayumi Kurihara

I am skipping one match since it is a battle royal against West Gate Pro Wrestling, a promotion I am not overly familiar with and it was more of a comedy match anyway. Since the event was squeezed down to two hours, some matches will be clipped.

NEO12.31.09-1
Aya Yuuki vs. Natsumi Kawano

This is Natsumi Kawano’s Debut Match. Don’t feel too bad if you are not familiar with these wrestlers as they are a bit obscure. Yuki actually still wrestles today, although not frequently and she mostly stays in smaller promotions, if you are a Stardom fan than you will know her better as Hatsuhinode Kamen. Kawano had a very short career, this was her debut but she later retired from NEO, she re-appeared in REINA but retired from REINA due to an injury in 2012. As far as I know she hasn’t been seen since.

NEO12.31.09-1Yuuki pushes Kawano to the ropes to start, Kawano fires back with an elbow but Yuuki throws her around by her hair. Kawano sneaks in a schoolboy but it doesn’t work, dropkicks by Kawano and she covers Yuuki for two. Scoop slam by Yuuki, she picks up Kawano and boots her in the chest before posing to the crowd. Shoulderblock by Yuuki and she hits a second one, a third shoulderblock by Yuuki and she covers the rookie for a two count. Running elbow drop by Yuuki, but again Kawano kicks out of the cover. Yuuki chokes Kawano and throws her to the mat, rolling fireman’s carry slam by Yuuki and she gets the three count! Aya Yuuki wins!

Even though it was short it was actually more even at the beginning than I was expecting. Either Yuuki is ranked even lower than I thought or they had some hopes for Kawano, as the veteran took it pretty easy on her. Kawano didn’t show anything here to make you think she’d be a star, her dropkicks wouldn’t have passed the Meiko Satomura Test, but it was only her first match after all. Nothing much to it.

NEO12.31.09-2
Fuka and Asami Kawasaki vs. Hikaru Shida and Tsukasa Fujimoto
Super Dimension Encounter ~ Athtress vs. Muscle Venus

I feel I should explain, Athtress was a term made up by Joshi promotion Jd’ Star, which as it appears was a combination of “athlete” and “actress.” Basically it was wrestlers that were also attractive, with the idea that they would able to also have careers as actresses or models. Jd’ Star was gone before this match started, but the name stuck around for a bit and Fuka was arguable the most successful Athtress from the Jd’ Star days. Hikaru Shida and Fujimoto ironically were actresses at the time, as the “Muscle Venus” stable name came from the television series sharing the same name.

NEO12.31.09-2Kawasaki and Shida start off the match but both are promptly jumped from behind, Shida and Fujimoto isolate Fuka but Kawasaki returns to help her partner out. Fuka and Kawasaki both hit knees to the chest but things settle back down, judo throw by Shida to Kawasaki and she hits a second one. Kawasaki kicks Shida in the back but Shida ducks the PK, another judo throw by Shida and she tags in Fujimoto. Fujimoto hits a rebound crossbody on Kawasaki but Kawasaki levels her with a boot to the face. Northern Lights Suplex by Kawasaki, but it gets a two count. Fujimoto sends Kawasaki into the ropes but Fuka kicks her from the apron, giving Kawasaki time to recover. Kawasaki tags in Fuka, kicks by Fuka to Fujimoto but Fujimoto hits a tilt-a-whirl headscissors. Sunset flip by Fujimoto but Fuka reverses it and they go back and forth with quick pins. Tiger Feint Kick by Fujimoto, she covers Fujimoto but Fujimoto bridges out of the pin. We clip ahead to Shida being in the ring with Fuka, lariat by Shida and Fujimoto hits Fuka with a Tiger Feint Kick. Shida picks up Fuka but Fuka kicks her, Kawasaki comes in but Kawasaki kicks Fuka in the head by accident. Shida picks up Fuka and hits a delayed vertical suplex, but Fuka kicks out of the cover. Kawasaki walks over and hits Shida with a heel drop, Fuka picks up Shida and she delivers the Fisherman Suplex Hold, but Fujimoto breaks up the cover. Fuka picks up Shida and hits the F Crash for the three count! Fuka and Kawasaki are the winners.

I am not sure if this is a sacrilegious thing to say but I have never been really impressed with Fuka in-ring. Very attractive, apparently a solid trainer, but her strikes never had a lot of impact and the F Crash is not a good finisher since it looks weaker than what we expect from wrestlers in Japan. Its a WWE-looking finisher if you will. I am not too familar with Kawasaki but she looked good here, solid kicks, and Shida is always a treat. A short match made shorter by clipping, a few fun moments but that is about it.

NEO12.31.09-3
Dump Matsumoto vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Miyako Matsumoto
Matsumoto #1 Decision Match

The battle of the Matsumotos! This was just done for fun of course. Dump Matsumoto was still fairly active in 2009, wrestling as a Freelancer in a variety of promotions. Miyako Matsumoto was (and still is) a mostly comedic Ice Ribbon wrestler while Hiroyo Matsumoto is also a Freelancer that today wrestles primarily in OZ Academy and Stardom.

NEO12.31.09-3Dump goes right after Miyako and levels her with a lariat, body press by Dump and she kicks Miyako out of the ring. She turns to Hiroyo, Hiroyo tries to knock over Dump but Dump absorbs her blows. Hiroyo tries to pick up Dump but can’t, Miyako returns and tries to help Dump but Dump shoulderblocks Miyako back to the mat. Dump flings Miyako by her hair and Hiroyo dropkicks Miyako, Miyako keeps sliding to the apron to escape but Dump pulls her back in so that Hiroyo can hit another dropkick. Hiroyo dropkicks Dump but it has no impact, release German by Dump to Hiroyo but Miyako has returned and tries to elbow Dump. Meanwhile Hiroyo goes up top and hits a missile dropkick on Dump, finally knocking her to the mat. Miyako dances around while Hiroyo holds down Dump, Dump eventually gets up and gets her kendo stick, hitting both Hiroyo and Miyako. Miyako rolls out of the ring but Dump goes out after her and throws her into the stands. Miyako runs away from Dump and returns to the ring, she celebrates but Hiroyo grabs Miyako from behind and hits the backbreaker into a gutbuster for the three count! Hiroyo Matsumoto wins and is the best Matsumoto.

As I mentioned this was more goofy filler than anything else, Dump Matsumoto does a lot of ‘comedy matches while still killing people with weapons’, it is almost one of her things these days. I always enjoy seeing Dump and Hiroyo is great, but just a short match with limited valuable aside from a few possible laughs.

NEO12.31.09-4
Kenny Omega vs. Natsuki*Taiyo
High Speed Alternate World

If you asked the average fan online which wrestler was best known for Intergender matches in Japan, they’d likely say Omega. Not because he has the most, but he has the most famous when he had a match against 9 year old Haruka in Stardom. But it is a match style that Omega is clearly comfortable with as he has faced off against many Joshi wrestlers over the years. Here he is against Taiyo, who looks like a child but was 25 at the time the match took place. Taiyo was a regular in NEO, she later went on to star in Stardom before retiring in 2014. Currently she is affiliated with SEAdLINNNG, acting as their director and occasionally a referee.

NEO12.31.09-4Omega tosses Taiyo to the mat after the bell rings and poses, Omega applies a wristlock but Taiyo reverses it before Omega throws her to the mat again. Armdrag by Taiyo and she hits another one, Omega applies a front necklock but Taiyo gets onto the ropes to force a break. The referee tries to step in but Taiyo pushes him away, armdrag by Taiyo and she hits a dropkick. Taiyo kicks Omega into the corner, Irish whip but Omega flips away from her. Omega goes for a hurricanrana but Taiyo reverses it into a powerbomb for a two count. Kicks and slaps by Taiyo but Omega comes back with a jumping kick of his own, Aoi Shoudou by Omega but Taiyo kicks out of the cover. Headbutts and another jumping kick by Omega, he goes to the apron and hits a swandive dropkick to Taiyo’s back. Snap dragon suplex hold by Omega, but Taiyo gets a shoulder up. Omega picks up Taiyo, slaps by Taiyo but Omega hits a release snap dragon suplex. The referee starts a ten count, Taiyo tries to get up but he can’t, and she gets counted down. Kenny Omega wins by KO.

This was too clipped down to recommend, since the match went almost ten minutes I assume that Taiyo got in a bit more offense than this. As it was, the point was for Taiyo to show how tough she is and she did, kicking out of several of Omega’s moves and almost making the ten count at the end. Omega has never minded selling for much smaller wrestlers since he is one of the few that understands it helps everyone to make your opponent look good, and everything they showed was crisp. In full this may have been a match worth hunting down, but not so much in this abridged form.

NEO12.31.09-5
Mima Shimoda, Kimura, Emoto, and Nakagawa vs. Makoto, Mio Shirai, Io Shirai, and Ishino
Shimoda and Amandora Blitz Union

I’m excited for this match, just knowing how all of the wrestlers on the “young” team turned out to be such quality wrestlers down the road. The Shimoda team are the bad guys in this match, as Shimoda generally was, although none were officially affiliated with NEO. The other team was not just some of the best young wrestlers in 2009 but they turned into the future stars of Joshi, with Makoto and Io Shirai the current Aces of their promotions (REINA and Stardom, respectively). Mio Shirai was one of the top Freelancers in Joshi before retiring last year, and Ishino is better known as Kagetsu, a current champion in Stardom. At the time of the match though none had reached near that level of success and were looking for an upset against the veterans.

NEO12.31.09-5Shimoda and company attack before the match starts and there are still streamers everywhere, Shimoda stays in with Io and she kicks her in the chest. Shimoda chokes Io in the ropes and throws her down by the hair, her teammates come in the ring and they all post on Io. We clip ahead to Io hitting a missile dropkick on Shimoda, giving her time to tag in Makoto. Armdrag by Makoto and she kicks Shimoda in the chest, jumping kick by Makoto and she covers Shimoda for two. Makoto goes for a double underhook but Shimoda gets out of it, roll-up by Makoto but it gets two. Shimoda’s teammates keep trying to help but it backfires each time, Io sails in with a missile dropkick on Shimoda and Nakagawa and they all stomp on Shimoda. The young underdogs take turns attacking Shimoda in the corner, handstand kneedrop by Makoto and she hits a second one for a two count. Makoto picks up Shimoda and nails the cross arm fisherman suplex hold, but Shimoda barely gets a shoulder up. Makoto’s friends return but they all miss dropkicks, then Shimoda kicks each one of them in the head. German suplex by Shimoda to Makoto and she hits a heel drop for a two count. Shimoda picks up Makoto and hits a tiger suplex hold, but Io breaks up the cover. Shimoda’s friends clear the ring while she puts Makoto on the top turnbuckle, avalanche suplex by Shimoda and she gets the three count! Shimoda and friends win the match.

As is a recurring theme on this show, it was just too clipped to get a real feel of the action. The only legal wrestlers we saw the entire match were Shimoda, Io, and Makoto, which is disappointing when there were five other wrestlers around (I am assuming in a 15 minute match that there were more tags than that). It was fun to watch, a few things were silly like everyone waiting for Shimoda’s heel drops and not everything was smooth, but I always enjoy seeing Joshi babies. Not great since Shimoda was the focus but not bad either.

NEO12.31.09-6
Emi Sakura vs. Kyoko Inoue
Joshi Puroresu MVP

In 2009, Emi Sakura was voted as the Joshi MVP by both Tokyo Sports and Nikkan Sports. I couldn’t find the complete results, so I can’t say for sure if Inoue also placed in the polls or she just challenged Sakura to show she was the real MVP. Emi Sakura at the time was the leader of Ice Ribbon, both as a wrestler and as the owner/head trainer, while Inoue was one of the founders of NEO.

NEO12.31.09-7Sakura dropkicks Inoue right as the bell rings which sends Inoue to the floor, Sakura gets on the top turnbuckle and sails out onto her with a plancha suicida before sliding back into the ring and hitting a tope suicida. Sakura gets on the top turnbuckle and hits a moonsault down to the floor, making three dives by Sakura in the first 20 seconds of the match. Sakura puts Inoue on a table at ringside and goes up to the top turnbuckle, she hits the Nyan Nyan Press but the table doesn’t break, probably making it even more painful for both. Sakura doesn’t care and gets back in the ring, Inoue joins her and Sakura hits a somersault senton for a two count. Sakura goes up top again but Inoue has had enough and clubs her in the head, Inoue joins Sakura but Sakura hits a sunset flip powerbomb for a two count. Sakura goes up top again but again Inoue joins her, and this time Inoue delivers a superplex. Lariat by Inoue, she picks up Sakura but Sakura chops her in the chest. Inoue absorbs the blows and floors Sakura with a hard elbow, Sakura gets back up but Inoue hits a lariat. Big powerbomb by Inoue, but Sakura kicks out of the cover. Inoue picks up Sakura but Sakura slides away and applies La Magistral for a two count. Lariat by Inoue, she waits for Sakura to get up but Sakura ducks the lariat attempt and hits a low flying crossbody for the three count! Emi Sakura wins!

This match wasn’t clipped, it was just a short match. Sakura sure knows how to get the most out of a match that goes less than five minutes, hitting half a dozen high spots within the first 30 seconds of action. It was an entertaining heavyweight sprint, a spotfest for sure but it came across as a special attraction match between two veterans. Inoue getting beaten like this shows the respect she had for Sakura, since technically she was the founder of a rival promotion. I actually enjoyed it for what it was, as I like seeing Sakura fly around the ring, but not long enough to get too excited about.  Mildly Recommended

NEO12.31.09-7
(c) Nanae Takahashi and Kana vs. Yoshiko Tamura and Ayumi Kurihara
NEO Tag Team Championship Match

Takahashi and Kana, part of a stable called Passion Red, won the tag team titles from Hiroyo Matsumoto and Kyoko Inoue on October 10th, 2009 when Takahashi pinned Inoue. This match is their second defense of the title, after defeating their friends Taiyo and Passion Ray on November 22nd, 2009 in NEO for their first defense. Tamura was one of the lead wrestlers in NEO and had already won the title twice before, but up to this point the young Kurihara had never won a championship in her career. This match has to deliver, since the other matches on the show were too clipped and nothing has really stood out up to this point.

NEO12.31.09-8aKana and Kurihara begin the match and immediately trade strikes, Kana jumps on the second turnbuckle but Kurihara dropkicks her out of the ring. Kurihara goes up top and dives out of the ring onto both Kana and Takahashi, she slides Kana back in where Tamura is waiting and they both attack Kana in the corner. Double cutter to Kana but Kana avoids the double vertical suplex only to eat a STO. Takahashi has also come in the ring, they are tied together on the mat and both are dropkicked in the head. Tamura stays in with Kana and hits a bridging vertical suplex, picking up a two count. Kana fights back with elbows and kicks but Tamura blocks one and hits a DDT. Suplex by Tamura, she picks up Kana but Kana slaps her in the face and kicks her in the chest. Kick to the head by Kana, and she covers Tamura for two. Kana tags in Takahashi, lariat by Takahashi in the corner but Tamura avoids the next one and delivers a high kick. Kurihara runs in and dropkicks Takahashi, Takahashi lariats out of the ring while Kana knocks Tamura out as well. Kana hits a hip attack off the apron onto Tamura, Takahashi gets a running start in the ring and sails out onto both of her opponents with a tope suicida. Kana waits while Tamura is slid back in and hits a diving hip attack onto Tamura off the top. Takahashi then goes up top and hits the Refrigerator Bomb, but Tamura gets a shoulder up. Takahashi goes for a backdrop suplex but Tamura lands on top of her and then hits a backdrop suplex of her own. Takahashi quickly comes back with a backdrop suplex but Tamura then hits another one. A final backdrop suplex by Takahashi ends the series as both are slow to get up, both wrestlers elbow each other until Takahashi hits a lariat for a two count. Tamura blocks the next lariat attempt and rolls Takahashi to the mat, fancy inside cradle by Tamura but it gets a two count. Tamura picks up Takahashi but Takahashi drives her back into the corner, neckbreaker by Tamura and she goes up top, but Takahashi joins her. Avalanche side slam by Tamura, Kurihara goes up top and Tamura helps her hit a somersault senton. Cobra Clutch Suplex by Tamura and she covers Takahashi, but Kana breaks it up.

NEO12.31.09-8bTamura tags in Kurihara, Kurihara goes up top and she hits a missile dropkick. Double knee by Kurihara in the corner and she slaps Takahashi to the mat, dropkick by Kurihara but Takahashi kicks her back and slaps her hard in the face. Cutter by Takahashi, but Kurihara kicks out. Takahashi goes for the reverse splash but Kurihara gets her knees up and hits a Codebreaker. Dropkick by Kurihara while Takahashi is against the ropes, Kana runs in to kick Kurihara and she trips Kurihara while Takahashi hits a lariat. Takahashi goes off the ropes but Kurihara sneaks in an inside cradle for two. Kana comes in but she kicks Takahashi by accident, Tamura then comes in and she elbows Takahashi. Dropkick by Kurihara to Takahashi, but the cover gets two. Kurihara goes off the ropes but Takahashi levels her with a lariat, Takahashi kicks Kurihara in the head but Tamura breaks up the cover. Takahashi tags in Kana, Kana picks up Kurihara and kicks her into the corner. Kana kicks the shit out of Kurihara for a bit but Kurihara catches one and slaps Kana in the face. German suplex hold by Kana, but Kurihara gets a shoulder up. Takahashi comes in and they both hit running kicks to Kurihara, punt kick by Kana and she hits a second one, but Tamura breaks up the cover. Kana goes off the ropes but Tamura intercepts her with an elbow, Takahashi tries to help but she lariats Kana by accident. Uranage by Kurihara, but Takahashi breaks up the pin. Jumping kick to the back of the head by Takahashi to Kurihara, then she hits a Blue Thunder Driver on Tamura. Spinning backfist by Kana to Kurihara, but Kurihara barely kicks out of the cover. Kana goes for a high kick but Kurihara ducks it and hits a uranage, she then drops Takahashi with one as well. Kurihara picks up Kana and hits another uranage, Tamura comes in and they nail the Tamashii wo Hitotsu Ni (Kudo Driver/Back to Belly Piledriver) that I’ve never seen done in my life. Cover on Kana, but Takahashi breaks it up. Kurihara waits for Kana to get up and nails an elevated running double knee strike, and she picks up the three count pinfall! Your winners and new champions are Yoshiko Tamura and Ayumi Kurihara

tamurakuriharachampions

I mentioned this match had to deliver, and God did they. This was just as stiff as you may imagine, but what was more impressive was that they just went non-stop from bell to bell while keeping the action smooth. I loved that the younger/less experienced wrestlers got the chance to shine by leading the final stretch of the match, and while Tamura was towards the end of her career here her skills had not diminished. The match had everything I could ask for – high flying, Kana kicks, suplexes, “Holy Shit” moments, and suspense. A high end tag match for sure, it is no surprise that Kurihara and Kana’s success and popularity continued to grow after this, both were great in this match. Definitely worth tracking down.  Highly Recommended
