FOTO LIBRE is a photobook series that has been around for nearly a decade and still continues to this day. The FOTO LIBRE photobooks do not focus on a specific gender or promotion, allowing the series to highlight a wide variety of wrestlers over the years. The FOTO LIBRE photobook series has been around for several years and is not promotion specific. The photobooks generally feature one wrestler and while most are masked wrestlers, its not a hard rule and in the past many non-masked wrestlers have been featured as well. Popular wrestlers such as Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask, Prince Devitt, Ultimo Dragon, BUSHI, Dr. Wagner Jr., and Io Shirai have all been featured in a FOTO LIBRE photobook, with some being featured multiple times. For Stardom X Stardom FOTO LIBRE #2, instead of focusing on a wrestler, an entire event was featured as the series took an early look at the wrestling promotion Stardom.

What is perhaps most interesting about this photobook is it was created very early in Stardom’s run, and before Io Shirai joined the promotion. So we see a glimpse of who was initially planned to be the future of the promotion, with Yoko Bito on the cover and both Mayu Iwatani and Arisa Hoshiki featured heavily. The pictures from the photobook were taken during Stardom’s event on July 24th, 2011 (titled of course Stardom X Stardom), where Nanae Takahashi won the World Of Stardom Championship. Since the photobook focuses on that show, we also get pictures of Haruka and her match against Kenny Omega, which would become famous down the road. This is a smaller photobook than most of the ones in the FOTO LIBRE series, but the pictures inside are priceless and its a fun look back at the beginning of one of the most popular Joshi promotions today. Popular wrestlers such as Jushin Liger, Tiger Mask, Prince Devitt, Ultimo Dragon, BUSHI, and Io Shirai have had a FOTO LIBRE photobook, with some being featured multiple times. Only once has FOTO LIBRE focused on just two Joshi wrestlers, and that special honor goes to Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani, also known as Thunder Rock.

If you are interested Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani posing in the ring and backstage with their titles, this is not the photobook for you. FOTO LIBRE 58 focuses on modeling and bikini pictures as the photo shoot took place in Guam, showing Mayu and Io outside of the ring and in more playful settings. There isn’t any nudity of course, and it is not as risqué as some of Io Shirai’s other photobooks, but it is definitely geared more towards beach and modeling shots than wrestling shots. Since Io has done other FOTO LIBRE photobooks that covered that aspect of her life, maybe that was the thinking in taking this photobook in a different direction. If you enjoy that side of Io and Mayu, this is definitely the photobook for you, as it includes them in both solo pictures and together. Here is a sample of pictures in the photobook:

Finally, Mayu Iwatani gets a solo run in a FOTO LIBRE photobook! FOTO LIBRE is a photobook series that features a wide range of wrestlers, including both men and women. The series mostly focuses on wrestlers that wear masks, however there have been exceptions to that over the years. Mayu is one such example, although there are pages in the photobook that show her wearing various masks from across her career so that the series stays on brand. Popular wrestlers such as Jushin Liger, Tiger Mask, Prince Devitt, Ultimo Dragon, BUSHI, and Io Shirai have had a FOTO LIBRE photobook, with some being featured multiple times. Mayu Iwatani once before was in a FOTO LIBRE photobook, when she did one with her Thunder Rock teammate, Io Shirai. But this is the first time she has been featured in the series as a solo wrestler.

FOTO LIBRE photobooks are known to be quality, and Mayu’s photobook is no different. What makes the photobook special is it features pictures from throughout Mayu’s career and doesn’t stick to just one time period of her life. It focuses on 2019 of course, but also has photos from her time in Thunder Rock and of some of her earlier matches. There are a lot of pictures of Mayu holding the various titles she has won, and the photobook doesn’t ignore its roots as there are also four pages that just show the various masks that Mayu has worn over the years. For fans looking for modeling/gravure-style photos, there are a few of those included in the book as well, however the major of the pictures focus on her in the ring. Overall this is one of the better photobooks released recently, and definitely recommended to any fans of Mayu Iwatani. Here is a sample of photos from the photobook:
